A grandmother has launched a one-woman crusade against a circus because she mistakenly believes that a man dressed up as a disco dancing polar bear is a real animal.
The ringmaster of Jay Miller's Circus, currently set up in Uckfield, East Sussex, is desperately trying to trace the angry woman, to tell her the nine-foot tall dancing polar bear she's complaining about was actually an actor - in an inflatable costume. The unnamed woman has apparently been bombarding the circus with angry phone calls and letters, after her grandson told her that his favourite part of the show was 'a massive polar bear who dances to disco music.'
Ringmaster Ross Farrer has made a public appeal for the woman to come forward, so he can prove to her the dancing bear is nothing more than a man in a suit, because she keeps telling animal rights activists about the 'cruel attraction.' He said: 'Jay Miller's is an all-human, family-run circus that tours the UK providing affordable, high quality entertainment for the whole family.
'We desperately want help regarding the unfortunate case of a misinformed grandmother who is now protesting against us over a massive dancing polar bear.' Mr Farrer believes the little boy probably saw this year's production as part of a free entry event at the Laughton Spring Fayre and failed to realise that the bear was in fact an actor wearing an inflatable polar bear costume.
He added: 'We were unable to obtain any contact information and the lady called from an unlisted telephone number. 'This lady is very upset and is reluctant to see our side of the story.
'So far her threats have been of adverse publicity but we are worried that she will contact you shortly with hyperbolic claims of dancing bears in chains. 'We would like to put the record straight. 'Yes we have a massive polar bear - but it is an inflatable costume with a human inside. 'We would love to get in contact with this lady and explain the situation and set the record straight. 'As yet the only word our box office team have been able to get through to her is 'hello' as they answer the call.
'A member of our staff told me he couldn't get a word in edgeways - she was very forward in voicing her views.' The circus has now started an online campaign to try and find the misinformed granny before more people start complaining about their act. He added: 'We believe circus is a medium to spread happiness and joy and we really don't want to be upsetting people. 'Please help us to find her as quickly as possible and explain the truth behind the confusion.'
