My aunt Nan, who died with Alzheimer's disease, was a "lemonade from lemons" type of person. During her remaining time at the home she welcomed the idea of meeting new people every day.

It was a day to remember... or not.

There are good people on both sides... great people. Great.

Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, but continued to tour for the next two years, until his health forced him to retire. The 78-year-old now lives in a residential care facility and is largely unaware of his surroundings, but as his wife Kim recalls, the country legend had a surprising reaction when he was first given the devastating diagnosis.

“It was terrifying,” she admits. “I couldn’t even say the word Alzheimer’s. I referred to it as ‘the A-word.’ I hadn’t really told Glen about the diagnosis yet because I was afraid to use that word.

“I had to finally use ‘the A-word’ with him, and he accepted it,” she continues. “I was so fearful that he was going to just break down and be depressed and cry, and he was like, ‘Really? Well I don’t feel it.’ I’m like, ‘Well, good!'”

The musical legend may be suffering from dementia, but his wife says that his personality remains largely intact, including his sense of humor.

“It gets us through every day,” she explains. “Even today, he tries to tell us a joke, and he has a real hard time communicating now: His sentences are made up of unrelated words, but he’s trying to tell us a joke, and it doesn’t make any sense to us, but he will laugh and laugh and laugh, and then we laugh at him and then that makes him happy that he made us laugh. So we’re still using humor to get through the tragedy of it all.

Horrible people.

I've had a number of close family friends and family members who went through that disease and I agree that there is nothing funny about it. However, for some of us, myself included, humor is a way of coping with the truly terrifying realization that any of us could wind up with that disease and have our brain drained of memories. No disrespect is intended to anyone suffering from it, but it is a way of coping.

I have an extremely good friend who has been suffering from vascular dementia (something like Alzheimer's, but coming on at a younger age and progressing slowly)--oh, and he's only 54. He has been abandoned by his family and is in a nursing home in Virginia (about 7 hours away); I hold his power of attorney and see him 4-5 times a year, sometimes he knows who I am, sometimes he's not so sure but we talk a little and try and keep in touch. There are many times that, if I didn't have the possibility of laughing, I'd cry and be no good to him at all. We all cope differently, but I'm sure no offense is intended to anyone.

Over here it's usually "what's the difference between God and a surgeon?" . . .

FWIW I don't think the original ALZ joke made fun of those suffering from mental deficiency, such as Ronnie did.

No, it made fun of Donald Trump who, as far as we know, doesn't suffer from any......

Oh. Never mind
