Other than there are a lot of people driving very fast there, like they're trying to prove a point to Californians.

But we hardly think that a vice. And WTF about drinking and talking?
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

A better one would be if you’re not passing the car next to you get the fuck out of the fast lane!

CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S MOTTO:

if you don't like the way I drive, stay off the sidewalk

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

:o There are sidewalks in California? Who knew? :nana
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

Actually, I would have thought that would apply more to NY (especially NYC); Californians (at least in the Bay area) can (and often do) drive aggressively on the freeways, but 4 way stops are observed in the cities--in NYC even red lights are ignored and sidewalk driving is just a way around the gridlock..

From Ron White:
... And one DWI, which was a bogus charge because they were stopping everybody that was drivin' down that particular sidewalk... and that's profilin'... and profilin' is wrong.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

And, while we are noting the inaccuracy of the mottoes, Oregon may have a reputation for recycling but in reality most people here are terrible at it, consistently contaminating the various bundles. The Chinese stopped taking our plastics because too many Oregonians could not follow the simple rules for what to include and what to not put in the bin. On a positive note, though, this ineptitude was practiced in a bi-partisan manner. ;)

Well, the last I heard Oregonians are allowed to pump their own gas. :ok

Why would anyone want to? I'm happy to live in NJ, where our state motto is properly "Never Pump Your Own Gas" (or, alternatively, "What are you looking at, pal?").

Personally, I'd prefer to pump my own gas rather than wait for the one guy serving the 8-12 pumps on 4 islands, but our illustrious legislature has deemed us incapable of doing this (although I often do after I get tired of waiting, risking the fine).

But that second motto applies, as would just a hand giving the finger.

I'd always assumed that law was intended to preserve employment for gas station attendants, and admired NJ for it. When I used to make the regular trip from law school in DC to NY or Maine to see family, I always purposely planned to stop in NJ for gas.

There is only one station in my current town that still has full service, same fuel price as self serve, and the pumps are always busy. When I need gas on a really bitter cold day, I always go there and give the attendant $5 for saving me the misery of pumping outside in the bitter cold.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Rural areas recently got an exemption; the rest of us are stuck waiting around for someone to stop by and fill our cars.

Originally, in Oregon, it was a fire code measure, and even decades later that passed the rational basis test in the ARCO lawsuit that sought to over-turn the law. Voters have had a few opportunities to eliminate the law but such attempts go down in flames (ha ha), for the reasons you mention -- lazy convenience and entry-level jobs.

entry-level jobs
there was a time when that might have been true in my area and stations had multiple attendants (and even washed your windshield), but eventually the gas stations cut back on attendants anyway, forcing everyone to wait in long lines for a single attendant. Right now, whether you pump the gas yourself or an attendant does, in most cases the stations will have the same number of attendants, as someone always has to take the cash (I have only seen one filly automated gas station near the Raleigh NC airport--you pumped the gas yourself and it only accepted credit cards, but it shut down after a few years.

as for convenience, I'd rather freeze than sit in a station for 10 or minutes waiting to get the gas pumped.
