It was a rather unsavoury conversation that was meant to stay between two friends.

But Sebastian Marsh and Harry Fildes appear not to have learnt that holding such discussions via email means they are unlikely to remain private for long. It only took a few clicks for their exchange about an unsuspecting girl to spread to inboxes across the country, leaving both men’s jobs on the line – not to mention their standing with the woman in question.

After bumping into his friend’s ex-girlfriend in the pub, Mr Marsh, 24, emailed former public schoolboy Mr Fildes to ask if he would have ‘any sort of problem’ with him pursuing the ‘hot’ blonde, adding ‘not my style to step on a mates [sic] toes for the sake of a girl!’. Mr Marsh, who works for a City insurance broker, also enquired as to why a mutual friend had told him the ‘looker’ came with a ‘bit of a health warning’.

Property surveyor Mr Fildes, 25, replied encouraging Mr Marsh to have ‘a crack’ at the girl, but warned: ‘I don’t dislike many people but she is one. ‘She massively messed me around, she also messed few of my mates from uni around, so I should have known better! Feel free to pursue her, yes, she is HOT!’

His less than flattering description failed to deter Mr Marsh, who responded from his work email account saying: ‘Oh she sounds brilliant… just the sort of thing I am looking for in the summer months. ‘My defenses [sic] are up and I am up for the challenge. Have you got an email address? I won’t tell her you gave it to me!’ But instead of simply copying his ex-partner’s email address into his reply, Mr Fildes accidentally added her to the exchange, telling Mr Marsh: ‘Good luck – you’ll need it!’

And to make matters worse, Mr Fildes still lives with his former lover in a shared house in Fulham, south-west London. After realising his mistake, he wrote to Mr Marsh: ‘I still live with her and that’s why I’m in so so so much trouble, we didn’t get on before so this will be the final nail in the coffin.’

But Mr Marsh found his friend’s mishap so amusing that he forwarded the discussion to a few friends – who in turn thought it was funny enough to share with their own friends. The exchange has since spread rapidly across the internet, being read by thousands and even handed around by amused customers at The Hurlingham pub in Wandsworth, where Mr Marsh first bumped into the girl in question. But for the two men, the joke has worn rather thin. Leeds University graduate Mr Marsh has been sent home by his firm while they ‘investigate the situation’.

Mr Fildes’ employer would not comment on his status yesterday, but co-workers confirmed he was not in the office.

In this age of automatic communication, the only surprising thing is that this doesn't happen more often.

or perhaps it does but people just don't bother sharing it with journalists. (If that is indeed who works for the Daily Mail.)
Bah!
