Signs of the times

Here's a sign which sums up the state of elf’n’safety Britain. It was sent to me by David Walker, who spotted it at the Concord Beach Paddling Pools on Canvey Island, Essex.

For generations, children have enjoyed splashing about and fishing for crabs in these tidal pools. This summer they were saved from closure after a campaign by local residents.

Now visitors are advised: ‘These are non-supervised facilities. All children must be supervised by an adult.’

There are 12 different hazard warning symbols and ten separate rules and regulations.

‘Caution shallow water; Beware of submerged objects; Beware of varying water depth; No diving; No dogs allowed in pool; Caution: surface around pool can be slippery; Beware of uneven surface; No jumping; Do not take glass into the pool; Do not climb on rocks.’

Yep, I think that just about covers the waterfront.

The pools also have a website, where you can find additional safety advice on the dangers of paddling, including: ‘The water may be cold.’ What, on Canvey Island? You don’t say.

My mum and dad took me there as a kid in the Fifties. I seem to have escaped unscathed.

So out of interest, I thought I’d check to see how many children have been killed or injured in these pools since they first became popular in the Thirties.

The Canvey Island Coastguard says the figure is precisely, er, none.
