Bingo!

This is what I posted here after we saw it:
Guinevere wrote:Over the weekend the Swede and I saw Zero Dark Thirty, to unexpected results. Mister Former Naval Officer/Movie (ooph, excuse me Film) Buff was all gung-ho and ready for the show of American might. I was interested, but slightly apprehensive about the torture scenes. He was surprised I even wanted to go, and enjoyed pointing out the ratio of men to women in the theatre (about 2:1) -- I enjoyed reminding him I'm no ordinary woman :D .

Three hours later: I loved the moviefilm, found it interesting, complex, nuanced, and intellectually challenging. The hardest part wasn't the torture scenes, it was the opening scene (which I won't describe). I thought the torture difficult but no worse than what has been portrayed on network TV (setting aside the moral issues about torture itself, which I think the film requires us to consider). I also thought Jessica Chastain was wonderful, and that her determination and perserverence drove the film. As you can probably guess by now, he hated it, and practically fell asleep in the middle. He thought it was haughty, humorless, and ponderous, without many redeeming qualities. He also thought there was too much Chastain.

I'm not sure how the movie is being advertised and marketed. Most of the chatter I've heard about it has been related to the torture and the role of torture. I think there is definitely a sense that the movie is tougher, more violent, and less intellectual than it actually is. The Swede and I agree that in some ways, it is ultimately a chick flick -- albeit for pretty strong chicks!

Over to you, Dales.

Against it? I should be positively astounded to hear of anything that could be said FOR it. Why, the whole bloody place is the most unspeakable matriarchy in the whole history of civilization! Look at yourself, and the way your wife and her strumpet of a mother push you through the hoop! As far as I can see, American men have been totally emasculated. They're like slaves! They die like flies from coronary thrombosis, while their women sit under hairdryers, eating chocolates and arranging for every second Tuesday to be some sort of Mother's Day! And this positively infantile preoccupation with bosoms. In all my time in this wretched, godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this preposterous preoccupation with bosoms. Don't you realize they have become the dominant theme in American culture: in literature, advertising and all fields of entertainment and everything. I'll wager you anything you like: if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse overnight.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Yeah, Dats got it. We had a rather lengthy discussion about great old movies on Le Chat House (obviously) a while back. I remember Mad X 4 World was one of Tess' nominees. When it came up on HBO shortly after that, I had to watch it. Having been a connoisseur of boobs since I was just a tiny baby, I remember thinking that the character Guin quoted was a bit of a jerk. Well, that might not have been the only reason... but like Jessica Rabbit, I think he was drawn that way.

(character 1) I'd love a hot dog.

(character 2) Astrodome. Good hot dogs there.

(character 1) Astrodome? You can't grow a good hot dog indoors. Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been boiling since opening day in April. Now that's a hot dog.

(character 2) The yellow mustard or the darker kind?

(character 1) The darker kind.

(character 2) Very important.

Wow ! ! I have no idea what movie it is from. But I love this string of dialog. It explains so very much about contemporary culture and values in the USofA.

snailgate

later edit: does this need to be from a movie? Seems to me to be part of a legitimate litany of Pastafarianism

The Dark Mustard Rises?
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

It makes sense in context. OK, it's been over 6 hours, unhelpful hint time:

The movie is a sequel, based on a novel (with a slightly different name) that was a sequel of the first movie's screenplay, not the book written concurrent with the first movie which were both based on an earlier short story.

Only 2 actors reprised their roles from the first film in the second, with one major role being recast.

It had 5 Academy Award nominations, which was one more than its parent film (the parent film won one, however).

It also would have to be a movie made before 1999, since that's when the Astros abandoned the 'Dome for their new digs at Meter Maid Minute Maid Park.

As an aside ... great name for a ballpark — NOT!!
Yeah, first thing I always think of is all those orange groves along the Gulf Coast in east Texas when someone mentions the name "Minute Maid" to me.
