I know Pa, AKA Ben Cartwright, AKA Lorne Greene, told the parable of the sticks on an episode of Bonanza, but that's not a movie.

Then, if you go back even further to Ezekiel 37:15 and on, you see the story of the sticks of the tribes of Israel becoming one nation under one King, David. Of course that's not a movie either.

I suspect the screen writers knew of both of stories.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Nope. This looks more difficult than I thought, so I will give a hint--it was directed by David Lynch.

That was a made-for-tv movie called The Deliberate Stranger...

Mark Harmon was fantastic as Theodore...

He was nominated for a Golden Globe...

I agree, but I sometimes wonder if that role didn't prevent his film career from taking off as it should have considering his talent.

I'm glad he's now had the role on NCIS, but I can think of many film roles over the years that Mark Harmon would have done very well.

Back to the movie in question, another hint: it was a departure for Lynch from his usual dark themed movies, and was a docudrama with a somewhat uplifting message. Richard Farnsworth starred in his last role (and received an Oscar nomination for best actor), and was supposedly suffering from bone cancer during the filming. It also had Sissy Spacek in a supporting role.

Figures, I'm not here for a few days and my standard answer wins. :(

And I have seen movies other than Das Boot.
I have seen all of Clint Eastwood's movies (I think).
Back to the movie in question,
Das Boot?

Too many hints there, Big RR, if even I can figure it out. It's got to be "The Straight Story".

You might want to take a look at it oldr--I would guess it might be a film you'd like.

Because it is filmed in German with subtitles and in a dark claustrophobic set?

Well a good portion of it is in a small trailer. :D But, so far as I recall, German is not spoken at all in the film, so you coud be right--oldr?
