and then you point to Penn, Brody and Pitt as people who could have done a better job at this or that role that was given to Reeves, then you have rather defeated your own argument. Surely it would not have been Reeves's name recognition that would have gotten him cast over any of those actors, all of whose name recognition exceeds his. Saying that there are other even more famous actors who could have done a better job than Reeves is no evidence that there was some lesser known quantity who was never given a chance to make a name for himself because Reeves was cast in roles for which he was not suited.Big RR wrote:I just think there are plenty of more talented people who don't get the chance to excel because he has name recognition.

Re: Name That Movie!
OK, but those are two different points I am trying to make: In the first, I was discussing Reeve's performance in a single movie and I conceded that, while it was good, I could think of a couple of actors who would have done a better job. Are there some lesser known actors who could have done the same--I maintain yes, but of course I do not know their names. Reeves was cast for a reason, and one I do not understand. And while he did an OK (in my view) job in that role, I did point out it could have been better. And FWIW, while Penn and Pitt had bigger name recognition around the time of the Devil's disciple (1998), Brody was pretty much a featured player, not a star, whose name recognition would have been the same as, or less, than Reeves.
The second point I made was that he also did a terrible job in a lot of films, and pointed out his playing Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula (and here are many others) as one example. he was panned by critics and audiences alike, yet he keeps on getting good roles. I find it almost impossible to believe that the producers could not find someone who would have played that principal role better, but they di not. Now you may disagree with me, or you may say there were no other qualified actors to play that role, and that's fie, but I just don't buy it (if you google topics like underrated actors you can see list sof them). I resume there are some reason he is cast despite bad reviews and performances, and he is by no means the least talented actor who gets these breaks, but it is something I do not understand,
Now if I am insulting one of your favorite actors, as I said I have nothing against him. He has done credible jobs in a few movies, including in the movie I quoted, and I have absolutely nothing personal against him. But I do see him as a mediocre actor at best who has gotten a lot of roles I don't believe he was suited, or had the experience for. Just one man's opinion, your's may vary.

Re: Name That Movie!
I don't have any skin in the game as far as Reeves is concerned, I just thought it an odd statement to make, since one could point to pretty much any actor that generates big box office (including those you cited) and ramble off roles in which they had been miscast.

I'm sure you're right.
Anyway, I still recommend the movie (and my recommendations are hard to come by for most films).
And BSG, everyone is waiting for your quote with bated breath.

Re: Name That Movie!
Sorry I was working all day! Here's my quote, will likely be an easy one:
He's a nice, quiet, peace-loving man, come home to Ireland to forget his troubles. Sure, yes, yes, he's a millionare, you know, like all the Yanks. But he's eccentric - ooh, he is eccentric! Wait 'til I show ya... his bag to sleep in - a sleeping bag, he calls it! Here, let me show you how it operates.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

That's OK. And a good movie.

A very nice choice for St. Paddy's day...He's a nice, quiet, peace-loving man, come home to Ireland to forget his troubles.
I suspect someone will get this one fairly quickly...

Yeah right...I don't have any skin in the game as far as Reeves is concerned,
He's a Canadian...

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

I guess I got the last one, but I had to work 12-plus hours on Saturday (10 hour regular shift + 2 hours mandatory OT at my new job) so I didn't get around to this until now.
Anyway, here's the next quote. It's from an oldie but a goodie:

I know it but can't answer - just weighing in to say I'm sorry if my acknowledgement of your correct answer wasn't clear.

Ray, that answer doesn't even deserve a response.
I'll put a second quote up by midnight.

As promised, a second quote:

-"BB"-
"I am a teacher! I am a teacher, first, last, always! Do you imagine that for one instant I will let that be taken from me without a fight? I have dedicated, sacrificed my life to this profession. And I will not stand by like an inky little slacker and watch you rob me of it and for what? For what reason? For jealousy!"
