OK, a new one:

You see, you don't know how much people need God. You don't know how happy He can make them. He can make them happy to do anything. Make them happy to die, and they'll die, all for the sake of Christ. Jesus Christ. Jesus of Nazareth. The Son of God. The Messiah. Not you. Not for your sake. You know, I'm glad I met you. Because now I can forget all about you. My Jesus is much more important and much more powerful.

Ah, I definitely saw this one back when it came out. I was an atheist in those days

The Last Temptation of Christ.

"This could work out real good for me and Jean and Scotty."

That's the quote from a real family-friendly movie

You mean this one doesn't end with an up-lifting large scale musical song and dance number? :P

This one is actually a little frustrating, because I know I've heard that line but I can't place the flick... :?

I believe it is brilliantly conceived, acted, directed and shot (and am certain I've stated that on this board more than once). Certainly, there are very unpleasant characters and actions but they are not elevated to be any form of entertaining heroes.

Nor is it a sophomoric potty comedy.

Oh - I thought you referred to the movie I was quoting. You probably meant TLTOC. That was thought-provoking. Kazantzakis concentrated on the humanity of Christ - wanting to explore the meaning of temptation. If Jesus was unable to sin (this is an old discussion), then of what value was his not sinning? Triumph over sin means temptation must truly include something of which one is actually capable - and the decision (or empowerment by dedication to God) to not give in to it. So he postulates a final temptation that occurs actually on the cross - Satan shows a rescued Jesus, not a resurrected one. He parades an entire life of what for humans is normal - marriage, sex, children. It is really no different than the temptation in the wilderness - "I can give you all this". Jesus sees all of that and in the mental sense "experiences" it - and chooses to be who he is; the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah and Deliverer. That is the first "risen" aspect of the passion and the Resurrection is the seal.

I don't think I'd want to watch it again. But it seemed to me a serious attempt to grapple with eternal questions. Objectors (to my way of thinking) were driven by an un(?)conscious belief that the Bible, like the Qu'ran, is in itself a Holy Object.

That's why there is only one version of the Qu'ran in Arabic but many versions of the Bible in multiple languages. The message is Holy - the medium is not.

Well Meade, I was referring to the movie from which the dialogue you posted was taken, and I would have thought you'd have found many of the scenes too objectionable to watch. I have no argument with what you wrote about it (although I never recall seeing you post that before about this movie).

I also agree with you re TLTOC, I found it thought provoking as well.

Well maybe you did post it, and maybe I even read it, but I have no recollection of reading any such statements. Appearances to the contrary, you're just not that important a part of my life that I keep your lists of movie likes and dislikes in mind, even if you did post it 6 times over the past 3 years.
