Name That Movie!
Re: Name That Movie!
It's kind of a western, but not Blazing Saddles.
Re: Name That Movie!
I think I know the movie, but cannot recall the name for the life of me; was Blythe Danner in it?
Re: Name That Movie!
BigRR is on the right trail. It is based on an early novel by one of the best American novelists since 1960. This writer has had numerous books turned into movies and mini-series. His greatest novel was turned into perhaps the best mini-series of all time. But the movie at question, despite a first rate cast, did not come close to the quality of the novel on which it is based. Another quote:
People are the hardest animals in the world to raise. That's 'cause nobody got around to breedin' them right in the first place.
PLEASE, Please, please... Name That Movie!

So close, RayThom, and yet so far away.
Re: Name That Movie!
If I'm on the right track, the best I can do is give someone else a hint; as I recall the film is a sweeping epic (over a period of decades) involving a love triangle of a woman (Danner I think) and two men in love with her (I think one is Tony Perkins); as I recall, both moon over and lust after her, but she alternately teases and spurns them,
even marrying someone else at one point.
Now that I think of it, the author of the novel also wrote the novel The Last Picture show (a much better film--at least I recall the name) was based on.
That's the best I can do; LR I'm impressed you recall the movie.

Re: Name That Movie!
All spot on, BigRR. The book title and movie title are different, and I'd give the nod for either one.
Re: Name That Movie!
Nope, can't think of either--hopefully someone else is helped by the hints.
Re: Name That Movie!
I stumbled on this on one of my streaming services recently and watched it, as I love Blythe Danner - much the better actor than her more famous daughter.
I’m not allowed to guess though.

A movie about a forty year love-triangle...
Well, now I know why I've never seen it...

The real theme was similar to Horseman Pass By/Hud and Last Picture Show, the transition of the American west. Missing this movie does not make you any poorer (though as BSG notes, a young Blythe Danner could carry any scene), but most people would find real value investing a few hours reading the book.
A clue for the novel's title: if a person lived in the capital of Wyoming and decided to move, this could be described as . . .

Doesn't half the book and half the movie count as 1?Long Run wrote:Got it half right MGM. Come on people, don't be hatin' wally . . .

It deserves serious consideration, at the rate this one is going.MajGenl.Meade wrote: Doesn't half the book and half the movie count as 1?

I’ve heard that was Debbie Reynolds’s favorite and best role; I really need to watch it sometime.
