Cunning as a fox, or not, as the case may be...

Foxes are cunning creatures, as a rule. But for every rule there's an exception - in this case, three of them.
The trio of cubs somehow managed to get their heads trapped in a grate.
It's unclear whether their bottoms slipped down or they foolishly tried to poke their noses through and up.

Either way, they were unhappy with the results and began crying for help.

Within minutes, the drain in Plainfield, Connecticut, in the U.S., was surrounded by firemen, police and an animal control-officer.
Unfortunately the foxes' knights in shining armour had no idea how to free them without causing any injuries.
With no tool available to cut the grating, firemen turned the tricky situation over to Animal Control Officer Karen Stone.
Firstly, she tried oiling their heads with Vaseline to allow them to slip out, but to no avail.
Corn oil didn't help either, but the wonders of washing up liquid eventually proved successful and the little pups wriggled free with a lesson to cause more mischief.

Very cute, but foxes stink on the order of skunks. I am glad I was not on the rescue squad.

They don't look particularly fragrant. (In a nice way anyway.)
