Would You Like A Dialogue On Race Relations With That?

I'm posting this in "laughs" because it just seemed too ludicrous to post anywhere else...
Apparently Starbucks has hired the woman in the video in the Santa Cruz thread as a marketing consultant:
Starbucks Baristas Encouraged To Write ‘Race Together’ On Cups To Spark Dialogue On Race Relations With Customers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – Starbucks is joining the national conversation about race in the latest sign that corporations are trying to tie their brands to big social issues.
The coffee chain known for its Frappuccinos says it will elaborate on the plans at its annual shareholder meeting Wednesday in Seattle.
Already, workers at its U.S. stores have been told to write “Race Together” on cups to begin a dialogue with customers about race relations, 1010 WINS’ John Montone reported.
Reaction among customers and workers at the Starbucks in Times Square was mixed.
“I like the idea,” customer Rudolph said.
“That’s pretty heavy for morning coffee talk,” said customer Dustin.
Pedro, a regular at the location, said he and Leo the barista chat all the time, but not about social issues.
“We talk about motorcycles, we talk about other things we can’t talk about on the mic,” he said.
Lexi, a barista, said she thinks writing “Race Together” on cups is “a great idea,” but she likes to keep it “short and simple” when engaging customers in conversation.
“I wouldn’t go as far as talking about something like that to customers, I don’t know what they might feel,” she said.
When Montone approached a barista to begin a dialogue she responded, “I’m actually working right now, OK, so I’m sorry about that, no comment.”
The company also plans to start publishing “conversation guides” on the topic.
The decision has sparked a backlash on social media, with people saying it’s opportunistic for a coffee chain to try and inject itself into such an important issue.

To be honest, had I not heard about this, I would have thought if I saw "race together" written on my cup that it was some kind health message; encouraging people to take up running with a friend...
Apart from the sheer ridiculousness of thinking that
anybody would want to get into some sort of heavy polemic with their barista while picking up their morning caffeine fix, it seems to me this is also a very unfair work requirement for the employees..
I don't mean requiring them to write "race together" on the cups; Starbucks could have them write "fuck you" on the cups if they thought that would be a good marketing strategy...
But
requiring them to take time to engage customers in a socio/political discussion, that has
nothing to do with their job duties...
And on top of that, instructing them on what they are supposed to say about the subject: "The company also plans to start publishing “conversation guides” on the topic."...

When I heard this on the news yesterday they mentioned that it was suggested but not required.
They are on to something though. They could start putting things like 'hands up, don't shoot' on the cups to get people to discuss current racial issues.

they mentioned that it was suggested but not required.
A thin line, when it comes from the top level of the company you work for...(I wonder if they plan to make the "guidelines" and the instructions for their managers public as well...)
Imagine the hue and cry that would go up if a company with a
conservative ownership...
Walmart say...
Were to implement a similar policy "suggesting" that its employees engage their customers in a "dialogue" about tax policy....complete with "guidelines" for what they were to say...
There'd be no end to the screaming...

Well, if a company wants to do that, regardless of the side of the political spectrum, I would imagine there's not much you could do, given a corporation's free speech rights, and it appears they can impose their beliefs on their employees to a significant degree. But personally I would avoid a venue where the person making my coffee drones on about race relations or my cashier lectures on tax policy just as I would a store that preached religion. Pretty silly to risk alienating customers to make a simplistic (and how could it be anything but given the time they have to interact with the customer?) political message.

I have been going to the same Starbucks for about 15 years and one of the baristas has worked there at least that many years. We always talk about our dogs. My dog is black so that should count.

How about "Pay tax together"?
Coffee giant Starbucks has paid £5m in UK corporation tax - its first such tax payment since 2009 - the company has announced.
A company spokeswoman said it had listened to its customers and would pay another £5m later this year.
The move follows pressure from politicians and campaigners, and an agreement by world leaders last week to clamp down on corporate tax avoidance.
Starbucks has only reported taxable profit once in 15 years in the UK.
It announced late last year it would pay more corporation tax after a public outcry and an investigation by MPs.
Fuck Starbucks, never use them.

Pretty silly to risk alienating customers to make a simplistic (and how could it be anything but given the time they have to interact with the customer?) political message.
And not just alienating customers they're "engaging with"...
Also the poor bastards standing in line
behind them...
Though 95% plus of the customers will have no interest in this "dialogue"
at all, there will be that
small percentage with nothing better to do with their time then chin wag
interminably with their barista....
Folks who will
jump at the chance for such a "dialogue"...(Retired "Meade types" with nothing to do and all day to do it...

)
And it will be
just my luck to wind up standing in line
right behind one of them...

(It's happened to me at the supermarket more than once...)
ETA:
I hope the "guidelines" will include some instructions on how to (politely) cut off a "dialogue" with some old fart who won't shut up...

Until I read it here I thought the idea was to get customers talking, not the workers. After all of the publicity on this it obviously has been successful in getting people to talk about something.
It seems to me like it would work best if the subject would change at set intervals. The thing is, I think the idea won't last for very long because it will result in race riots all over the country.

They also sell mediocre tea, smoothies, pastries and pre-prepared sandwiches. But people who buy those usually like to talk about religion rather than race.

What we need is a great big melting pot
Big enough to take the world and all it's got
And keep it stirring for a hundred years or more
And turn out coffee colored people by the score

This is a much better idea for disposable coffee cups - a couple of smart folks out there who don't, obviously, work for Starbucks:

I have never been in a Starbucks and don't plan on it either.
I am very interested in that seeded coffee cup site. Thanks Guin.
And I put my used coffee grinds around the base of my roses or in the compost pile.

Upper-Middle-Class Woman Worries There's Better Coffee She Doesn't Know About
News in Brief • people • human interest • food • products • shopping • rich • ISSUE 38•42 • Nov 13, 2002
DEERFIELD, IL—Upper-middle-class homemaker Irene Risser expressed fear Monday that there exists a gourmet coffee superior to the brands she currently buys. "I have Kona Coffee's peaberry flavor, which is really terrific, and I also like to buy Sumatran Rainforest," Risser said. "But I still worry that somewhere out there, someone has better, more expensive coffee than I do." Risser then went on the Internet to search for $25-a-pound breakfast blends.

Lovely how the racism industry has taken that sentiment and perverted it

Ah for the good old days when the only coffee decision was "White or black?" Now the answer to that question appears to be begging for an extended discussion of moronic opinions.
