A US lighthouse will begin a journey inland on Thursday to avoid falling down an eroding cliff side.

The $3m (£2m) effort will move the 400-tonne Gay Head Lighthouse in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The 160-year-old structure helped mariners navigate foggy coastlines during the peak of the whaling trade in the region in the 1800s. The historic lighthouse should arrive at its destination farther away from the Atlantic Ocean by Saturday.

As it stands now, it is only 46ft (14 metres) from the edge of a cliff.

why is this in laffs? moving huge things is fun, the planning and prep must be perfect. I really enjoyed it and was good at it.

I was pretty sure that a company right up the road from me would be doing the job, so I googled it and sure enough, Expert Housemovers is doing the job. We used to fabricate things for them from time to time, steel stuff that they needed to do their moves. I actually thought about going to work for them, but I was a single dad at the time and couldn t travel.

Lighthouses are (generally) taller than they are wide. News at 11.

The theme for today applies:

I got my erection stood up yesterday evening. it was really big and heavy so I had to use a come-along to get it up. I just strapped it to a tree and yanked the handle back and forth until it rose to its full height and stood proud in all its glory. I had everyone move back while I got it up for safety reasons. I didn t want my large erection to crush anyone. once it got to its tipping point I let the neighbor help me ease it down into its proper resting place.....

now it is standing tall and proud out by the garden....
