A DESPERATE suspect swam a shark-infested river with a police dog hanging off his leg while police commandeered a passer-by's jet-ski to make the arrest to end a dramatic chase on the Gold Coast.
It was an amazing ending to a marathon chase full of incident, including a shooting, a police car being rammed, and a tyre blowout, the Courier-Mail reports.
The drama began about 3am when officers arrived at an Ashmore Plaza bottle shop in Cotlew Street in response to an alarm and disturbed two offenders.
One of the men ran off on foot while the other jumped into a car which he allegedly drove at police, causing one officer to fire a shot at the vehicle.
About half an hour later, the car was spotted at Carrara where it hit a roundabout, bursting a wheel, before reversing into another police car.
The driver then fled into backstreets, with the police dog squad hot on his tail.
Cornered, the suspect dived into a part of the Nerang River near Sir Bruce Small Drive at Benowa notorious for bull shark sightings and began swimming across with a police dog hanging off his leg.
Partway across the water, the dog let go, leaving police standing on the shore watching the man escape, only for an early morning jet-skier to come by and offer his assistance.
An officer then crossed the river on the jet ski and made the arrest.
Police caught his alleged accomplice at Ashmore.
Two men, aged 30 and 33 are now being questioned by police.
Officers from the Ethical Standards Command are investigating the deployment of a police firearm.
