That's a rule of mathematical reasoning and its true because it works - has done and always will do. In his book Euclid says this is self evident. You see there it is even in that 2000 year old book of mechanical law it is the self evident truth that things which are equal to the same things are equal to each other.

Ray, I have an idea, but will wait for an additional quote to be sure and to give others a chance. If it's the movie I'm thinking of, I saw it when I was a kid too, and the end (a very sad one) stuck with me for a long time. Not the typical child fare of the time (especially given who produced it), but it was a good film (maybe because of that).
