Chicago - That Toddlin' Town

A Chicago-area driver, whom police suspect was drunk (you’ll never guess HOW), crashed into a tree and wedged it into her engine bay. But instead of stopping like a normal human being might have, the trunk driver inexplicably just kept on going.

The Roselle Police Department posted two pictures on its Facebook page depicting a car with a 15-foot tree sticking out of its grille. The car had been driving in suburban Chicago late at night on the 23rd of January when another driver spotted it and called the cops.

An officer did eventually spot the car, possibly from a mile away, and pulled the tree-wielding Lincoln Town Car over. The officer noticed the airbags had been deployed (for obvious reasons), and that the driver appeared to be intoxicated.

The suspect behind the wheel, Maryann Christy, told the officer that she had run into a tree in a nearby town, but that she didn’t recall where exactly the accident took place, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Who runs into a tree and can’t remember where it happened? That seems like a fairly dramatic event to forget about, if you ask me.

The driver failed sobriety tests and the officer took her in on driving under the influence charges, police said. It was a bad day for her, and while alcohol may have affected her motoring skills, at least she still knew how to drive a stick.

ZING.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

As noted in the story, this was way out in the 'burbs...so there are a lot of places it could have happened: Oak Park? Oak Forest? Forest Park? Hickory Hills? Elmwood Park? Wood Dale? Lake Forest? Cedar Lake? Willow Springs? Lindenhurst? Evergreen Park?

Methinks she'd better confine her driving to Rolling Meadows or Plainfield until she sobers up.

Note the car was still moving around under its own power. This is better than the old Timex commercials--this Lincoln can take a beating and keep on ticking.

A Coffs Harbour mother has allegedly returned the highest blood alcohol reading in the state's history – and possibly the country – after she crashed into a fence and was found unconscious last month.
Trudy Friend, 52, has been charged with an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.486 - nearly nine times the legal limit.

Ms Friend was driving on Sawtell Road in Coffs Harbour at about 2.45pm on January 13 when her Hyundai Veloster veered to the left before mounting a curb and smashing into a fence, police say. Inspector Joanne Reid, from Coffs Harbour Police, said the potential for "something catastrophic" to happen from the woman driving on a busy road with such a high alcohol reading had been "incredibly high".

"Based on our records, it's the highest ever recorded. I have been in the police for 22 years and I have never seen anything come close to that," she said on Tuesday. "I have never seen anyone at 0.4. – even for a bloke [the alcohol reading was at the highest level]. "The fact that she only hit a fence is miraculous. Sawtell is a fairly busy road and connects to the Pacific Highway."

Emergency services had found the woman unconscious in the car when they arrived at the crash scene last month and she was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital where she was placed in an induced coma. Last Friday, police received confirmation Ms Friend had a blood alcohol content of 0.486. The woman's licence was seized and she has been issued with a licence suspension notice. A blood alcohol concentration under 0.05 is the legal limit for most drivers in NSW.

However, the limit is under 0.02 for taxi or bus drivers while it is zero for learners and P-platers.

Police warn that alcohol affects people differently due to size and weight, gender, liver function and other factors such as a person's fitness or whether they are fatigued. "The lesson is that ... if you plan to behind the wheel of a car, don't drink," Inspector Reid said. Ms Friend will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on May 2.

Her tolerance is way way up, indicative of an alcoholic. Hope she seeks help.
Glad no one was hurt or worse.

In my "prime" I could easily blow high "3s" as tested by my friend, Andy, a State Trooper, who always had a calibrated breathalyzer in his personal car.

Oddly, whenever I was on the move bar-hopping with my drinking buddies, it was ALWAYS my turn to drive. Although blackouts were common I was NEVER pulled over, nor cited, as a suspected DWI/DUI.

When all is said and done... almost 35 years of sobriety has served me best. Life is good.

DWI was SOP for me. Not proud of it. :(
Never pulled over nor had an accident.
Didn't suffer black outs either.
Highest I ever tested was .27 and didn't "feel" drunk. I am sure I would have tested higher many other times had there been a breathalyzer around.
Not proud of that either. :(
