Florida Cops Arrest Man In Traffic Stop After Krispy Kreme Icing Tests Positive For Meth

A Florida man was arrested during an Orlando traffic stop because white flakes found in his car tested positive as crystal meth. It turns out, the flakes were
just icing crumbs from Krispy Kreme donuts.
According to the Orlando Sentinal, Orlando police were staking out a 7-11 when the saw a man enter the store then leave with an employee. They followed the man who, according to police, failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and then drove at a speed of 42 mph in a 30 mph zone.
After pulling him over the officer noticed the driver’s concealed weapon license and asked him to surrender his firearm for safety. He complied and exited the vehicle. That is when the officer noticed a strange white substance on the seats.
I recognized through my 11 years of training and experience as a law enforcement officer the substance to be some sort of narcotic,” the officer wrote in her report. 
The driver, 64-year-old Daniel Rushing insisted that substance was just donut flakes from a recent Krispy Kreme run. However, a roadside test revealed that the substance tested positive for methamphetamines.
“I kept telling them, ‘That’s … glaze from a doughnut. … They tried to say it was crack cocaine at first, then they said, ‘No, it’s meth, crystal meth.”
Daniel Rushing was arrested, charged with possession with a weapon. He was strip-searched and jailed in December. Several weeks after his arrest the crime lab revealed that the substance was not a narcotic.
The prosecutor’s office dropped the case, but Rushing has hired a lawyer and is seeking damages from the city. According to a New York Times report citing the Florida Department of Law Enforcement lab system,
21 percent of roadside drug tests given by Florida law enforcement incorrectly identified a substance as methamphetamines.
Orlando police offered no explanation as to why the roadside test revealed the false positive.

Field tests, even of sobriety, are not legally admissible in court although they can be used as a grounds for detention. I presume the same holds true for field testing for drugs and/or drug residue. This is why, when someone is arrested for driving under the influence, a second, more accurate test of breath, urine, or blood is administered under more controlled conditions and this is what is used in determining if any charges are filed.
So another good question is whether a second, more accurate test of the "meth" was ever made (prior to the crime lab determination) and what it revealed — and if not, why not?
Secondly, why would he be charged with possession of a weapon? The article says that the officer noticed he had a concealed weapon license which means, to me, that the weapon was lawful. The article also said that the suspect surrendered the weapon "for safety" when asked to do so, so it's not like he pulled it out and threatened officers with it during the course of the stop.

But it is great warm lard and glazed, not powdered sugar. I will cross the town in Independence Mo looking for that 'hot' sign on Noland Road. They now have a plant here, across the street from the Wilmington airport. That is out of the way for this household's normal travel. We use that as the excuse for rarely buying one. Their coffee is ok, much better than Dunkin Donuts, but too expensive. When we go there, I buy two small coffees and three donuts. My wife eats one, I eat two. I think I could scarf down a dozen of them in one sitting and still want more. But I intellectually know that they are the anti-health food, worse than McD's french fries.
Clearly they are a dangerous substance, for those of us who are vulnerable. I think it is genetic.

We had one in our area; opened up in January 2004 with a great deal of fanfare and whoop-ti-do. Lasted for about two years. The big red "Hot Now" sign went black permanently in February 2006 when the franchisee (a company called 'Glazed Investments Inc.' which controlled 20 Krispy Kremes in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Colorado) filed for Chapter 11. Another franchisee bought about 12 of the stores through a bankruptcy sale, but our location wasn't one of them.
Part of the building was converted into a Buffalo Wild Wings that's been there for at least eight years now.

I can only assume that they taste much better when fresh-cooked and hot, because the few times I've sampled a Krispy Kreme donut it was neither, and completely unremarkable...not as good as Dunkin Donuts (not that that's saying much), akin to the packaged donuts you might buy at the grocery store.

Yeah, that's about it. I can't imagine "warm lard and glazed, not powdered sugar" being all
that much better, but as I said I've never had them hot (and don't really care if I ever do), so I'll withhold judgement. I eat enough other unhealthy foods; I can do without....

The Krispy Kreme here in New Castle County, DE does a big business packaging and shipping their product to grocery stores and convenience stores in the area. The real thing is purchased when a special light displayed to the street indicates the production equipment is operating and you can get them in your hand a fraction of a minute after they are made. Fresh is always better. I would rather get a Hostess Twinky at a store before I would get one of those donuts at a convenience store. Duncan Donuts is even worse. You cannot get a fresh one anywhere. They are all cooked at some remote factory and then shipped to the retail outlets. There is good reason the tv ads for this company talk about their various drinks rather than the donuts.
Me, I am nostalgic for something called 'spudnut' that was a donut franchise outfit that used potato flour. There was one here in this area back in the early 1970's, but they have disappeared.

Donuts at DD are still made fresh every morning, just not in all the stores. Some stores here do still make them in house, but not many (those that do often have lines).
And yes, coffee is the leading seller now. About 60% of DD revenue comes from coffee sales.
Never eaten a Krispy Kreme, and never will.

I ate a Krispy Kreme donut about 12 years ago. It was warm and tasted like a donut. It seemed smaller than other donuts that I remember seeing. I wonder what it would taste like with Marmite added?
Well, I'll be dipped... Look what I googled....

Most of them are made at night in a central facility (on US1 in Foxboro, as I recall) and delivered in the early morning.

That's sounds much like the KK that came to Springfield PA around the same time. Chick-Filet has a successful franchise operating in the building now.
I was a frequent patron at this store and I remember the last night they were open. They had a fully blown production going on but the employees were just holding empty boxes at the end of the conveyor and letting the boxes fill up. Then they'd pass the box to any customer who was there. I left with two overfilled boxes with probably six or seven dozen doughnuts.
A fun time was had by all.

When KK hit here, it was with lots of fanfare too. A couple of local shops were predicted to go under, but it was two of the three KKs that bit the dust. Now there is only one shop, but KK doughnuts are available at all of the stores of at least one of the regional stop-and-rob chains. I know they don't make them on site. The local shops are still up and running, and do make a superior product. Most of the doughnuts I eat, usually a pair every Friday, come from a local grocery store that does make them on site.
