For the first time in the thirteen year history of the Icelandic National Championship in Ram Groping, a woman has won the contest, according to Morgunblaðið.
The championship took place on Sunday at the Sheep Farming Museum at Strandir, Steingrímsfjörður, the West Fjords.
As always, there was competition both among professional gropers and amateurs. Each group counted almost 40 contestants.
In the end, the 23-year-old Hadda Borg Björnsdóttir from the farm Þorp in Strandir, won among the professionals. She has participated in the contest several times before and has enjoyed it.
“I grew up in the countryside, and I’m a sheep farmer, so I enjoy looking at and evaluating sheep,” she stated. Right now she lives in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, but plans to return to Þorp in a few years to take over the farm. She has a degree in agriculture and knows a lot about evaluating rams.
The competition involves giving the rams points in different categories in an attempt to match points already given by a committee of experts. Each contestant evaluates four rams.
