I think the distinguishing feature of 'cor blimey' (often 'gorblimey' which more accurately reflects its derivation) trousers is that the foot end was tied up in string, supposedly to stop rats from jumping up one's legs when engaged in some squalid occupation.

Nah, the string was below the knee area. Chimney sweeps. Sometimes the coalman. I never saw strings on the dustmen's trousers and I very much doubt the rat story. Keeping dirt and dust out of the old meat and two veg I'd believe

The point is that the trousers are pretty amazingly awful, considering the job.

That tap would have been a good way to begin this thread.

Obviously the picture is of someone named Richard, but who?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

He reminds me of a singer I once saw when I was on vacation in Caramel.

It might interest you to know that Richard is Cockney (i.e., working class Londoner - think Eliza Doolittle or whatever it was Dick van Dyke was trying to do in Mary Poppins) rhyming slang for a turd.

Richard = Richard the Third = Turd

Works for me.

BTW in true Cockney-speak, the rhyming bit is never uttered. Thus Richard = Turd. Or Apples = Stairs, via Apples and Pears.

I find that too unlikely despite the proliferation of internet repetition. It is a groaningly painful effort to make up something along the lines of Fornication under condemnation of the King.

My Cockney father never pronounced "Third" as "turd". And nor did I. He managed "ferd" as I recall. My mother would have slapped me so I went with "Third".

There's an old joke (ca 1960) about an Irish kid who answers a history question "That's Dick Shit". Richard the Third, says the teacher. "Ah, that's what I said. Richard the Turd".

I suspect that the Irish "turd" for "third" has been adopted by would-be cockney interweb prancers until it's back-read into history

Was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner last year
where everybody was supposed to bring a dish to share.

Oh BB, that is so apt. I have a new recipe from the NY Times for the very best ever (stuffing) or (dressing) depending on your local lingual culture. It cals for both corn bread and white bread. The notes say it is ok to use 'bought' cornbread" I have never seen such an item in my local grocery stores. My ex-wife used to whip up batch of corn bread quickly and easily in MY cast iron skillet. That was the only time she used it. Such culinary delight is beyond my skills however. You have shown me the way.
