Jobsworth...

The same council that tried fining a little girl for selling lemonade has issued a penalty notice to a cycle shop for setting up a free bike pump.

Isambard's Cycles tweeted that it will no longer offer the pump to passing bikers, after Tower Hamlets Council threatened them with a fine.

Jobsworths from the authority allegedly demanded they are paid 'for the privilege' to use the pavement outside the shop.

It comes after 100 miles of London roads were closed for the Ride London event.

Criticising the council on Twitter, the store wrote: 'First #lemongate now #airgate.

'Sort your enforcement officers out.'

They added: 'Tower Hamlets are fining us for having this free pump outside for cyclists to use.

'If we want to provide a free pump for passing cyclists, Tower Hamlets expect us to pay for the privilege.'

Just this month the council's enforcement officers caused a five-year-old girl to cry after shutting down her homemade lemonade stand.

Until they moved, our local Schwinn dealer used to have an air compressor inside the shop with a pipe running through the wall and a hose on the exterior side that was available 24 hours a day, much like the "Free Air" hoses that used to be found at just about every service station in the country back in the day. It's a pity that the Brit fuddy-duddies persist in trying to make it so hard on everybody else.

Now, we've got four of these set up through the downtown area; simple, sturdy bike repair stands with a built-in tire pump (you do have to BYO tools). In addition, another three have been erected on the campus of UW-La Crosse; these also have a built-in tire pump as well as some basic tools cabled to the workstand itself and a scanner for cellphones that will direct the user to a site with instructions on how to perform simple repairs.

I have to say I was intrigued by the ad on the right hand post in that pic: the beer by bike brigade (BBBB).

Looks like a civilized concept.
