somehow I'd bet Ron would have laughed at it. He had a sense of humor that could be self deprecating at times.

It's not funny if you've spent time with anyone suffering from Alzheimers or dementia. And that's not how the disease works, either. My brilliant father couldn't recognize his daughters, or distinguish between us, but he could still use his intellectual brain quite well, and remained the family soduku champion until his death.

I just spent the past six months with someone suffering from Alzheimer's, early onset with his life ending far too soon at only 63. Humor, including about the disease, was one of his family's ways of coping with the devastation they were experiencing - which for the last few years included him not being able to feed himself, bathe himself, dress or toilet himself, much less any interaction that could be considered remotely intellectual.

Stop judging other people and expecting everyone to think and feel exactly as you do.

I agree with what BSG and Ray said.  Sometimes you've just gotta laugh about things, no matter how sick or inappropriate it may appear, or you'll spend the rest of your life in depression crying about them.

Speak for yourself, BB. It was extremely painful to see my brilliant, adored father, who adored me back, in that place. But just because I can articulate what that pain was like doesn't mean I'm depressed, or that I dwell on it. In fact, quite the opposite.

And while there was plenty of humor that helped my sister and I through his disease and his death (from dementia-related causes), making fun of people with Alzheimers was never part of it.

Fuck you, Guin. Nobody is making fun of people with Alzheimer's and my dear client's devoted family certainly weren't making fun of him while engaging in therapeutic humor about his devastating illness. I don't know what your father's ultimate cause of death was, but people with end stage Alzheimer's aren't capable of playing Sudoku - they can't speak, and usually die because they ultimately can't even swallow. I've now had over 100 hours in training related to Alzheimer's care, and have read several books on the subject. It's not 'making fun of' Alzheimer's sufferers to acknowledge that they have huge intellectual deficits.
