What a coincidence...
I always look for the most intelligent, quickest cashier, and frequently find myself at that same checkout...

I try for the one where things will be bagged correctly...so yeah, self-scan for me.

I always look for the checkout where I can watch people in front of me try to purchase one or two items and take 20 minutes to figure out how to do it while I stand in line with ice cream melting in my basket, the urge to pee, and looking forward to getting out of the store outside into 95 degree heat to get into my black car parked 50 yards across the lot nowhere near any kind of shade next to two cars parked on both sides so close to mine that I need to open the hatchback to crawl up into the front seat.

If I had wanted to be a check-out clerk at Mall-Wart, I would have
applied for a position as a check-out clerk at Mall-Wart.
Otherwise, give me a 5% employee discount since I'm doing
*YOUR* job.

I get the same asshole every single time, and almost always the same annoying "unexpected item in bagging area -- remove item and re-scan" voice message. "Shut the fuck up," I start screaming while tossing the item around on the scale. And now everybody on line is looking at that asshole. A one minute transaction turns into fifteen.

Yeah, Ray...that's pretty much my own typical experience, too...

I think you've been in front of me on the self scan line a number of times, Bill.

If you cannot figure out how to use a self-scan checkout, I question whether you are fit to live on your own. A six-year-old can figure them out!

Agreed. I mostly function at a five year old's level. I like to use them just to piss off all of those waiting in line behind me. It makes my day.

Again: if you cannot figure out a self scan, you should probably be required to have yourself evaluated in order to determine whether you should be placed in some sort of assissted living situation.

It's easy to figure out—
when the stupid machine is working correctly.
If it's not (e.g. not giving the correct sale price, needing numerous repeated scans before the item finally registers, charging for a different item than the one you just scanned, telling you repeatedly that there is an
"unexpected item in the bagging area"...etc., etc.) then your choices are pretty much limited to (a) cancelling the sale, loading your already-scanned items back in the basket, and moving to another register or (2) hunting for a store employee with enough authority/intelligence to fix the problem.
(Or, if you're at Home Depot and one of your items is a 36-inch wrecking bar, you may have a third choice...
)
