Apparently among gay men it seems to backfire as an anti-smoking message, they can continue smoking and Cher can be immortal.

I never realized Cher occupied that position among the gay community--Judy Garland and Liza, yes; Lady Gaga, I guessed; but Cher was bit of a surprise.

I hadn't heard that, perhaps among a generation older than me. Cher, on the other hand, achieved goddess status long ago.
