Name that made-for-TV movie or miniseries

Post by Scooter »

Since the other movie thread excludes these, and appears to be fizzling out and degenerating into silliness, I thought I'd start this one.

As should be obvious from the title, it's about recognizing made-for-TV movies and miniseries from the quotes (and clues, if necessary). Same rules apply as in the other thread.

So I'll start off with an easy one (and that is a clue):
-- Hey, George.

-- Yeah?

-- Kind of remind you of Bastogne?

-- Yeah, now that you mention it. Except, of course, there's no snow, we got warm grub in our bellies, and the trees aren't fucking exploding from Kraut artillery, but yeah... Frank... other than that, it's a lot like Bastogne.

Well, if I can't offer movies that "degenerating into silliness" then I'm afraid I'll be clueless.

A man's got to know his limitations. I'm out of ammo.

Thanks for the new thread, Scooter. Here is the next well-known one:
H, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

I will leave it to participants to decide, but expanding it to series that span several seasons and dozens of episodes may make it somewhat unwieldy, unless, like you just did, people restrict it to very recognizable quotes.

I guess you are right. In my mind I think of this one as a mini-series but it was actually a regular series with a limited life span. Sorry about that.

I actually think of the 3 seasons as distinct miniseries--one, a very short season directed by the creator, the second where the direction was opened up to others (with very different results), and the third involving a lot of different characters with some favorites still there (and coming years later), but I can't argue with your assessment.

Fair enough, that's why I said I prefer to leave it to participants to decide. What I was hoping wouldn't happen would be someone using "give him another unit of whole blood" and expecting people to guess which episode from 11 seasons of MASH that it came from.

I agree Scooter, and I have no problem in exempting series having multiple runs (as opposed to seasons); there are probably very few miniseries that fall within this group(the only one that immediately comes to mind is the two different Rich Man, Poor Man minseries (which I think were based on different parts of the book (although I am not sure).

At least two people already know the answer to this one, but here is another:

I looked it up... (would never have gotten it; wasn't a fan of the show)

Regarding mini-series (or a limited series, as opposed to a one-off made for TV movie) it seems to me it ought to be good enough just to name the series, not the title of the specific episode...

Well yes, typically a mini-series would not have distinct episodes to be able to identify. As I said my issue would have been ongoing series and quotes therefrom that would be next to impossible to pinpoint.

Apparently there was no great craving for this idea. Oh well...

I suggest Long Run withdraw this entry and that he replace it with an actual made-for-TV movie or mini-series...

I think it qualifies as a limited (mini) series, both in the original and in the follow up that was specifically designated as such.

eta: I would propose editing the thread anyway to include all TV series of whatever duration - it’ll make the game last longer and I think we’re up to the challenge.

Whatever people want, if it's a long running series it's going to have to be a quote that is incredibly evocative of the series to be memorable/recognizable.

How about you try one out and see if it can work.

What about Les Misérables that's running on PBS... does that qualify as a made-for-TV movie and/or miniseries?

Another quote from this classic TV show I’ve been revisiting in the evenings with an elderly client:
There's a woman back in Hannibal, Missouri, who's spent the better part of thirty years waiting for me to come home from one tour of duty or another. She's had to learn to do an awful lot on her own. Now I'm going home to see if she can show me how to do it with her.
