There's dumb, and then there's..

Arizona’s death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 16,000 this week, so naturally, the state House figures it’s time to allow businesses to ignore local mask ordinances.

Image

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Joseph Chaplik of Scottsdale, reasons that it’s a matter of individual freedom and besides that, society has managed to survive other viral outbreaks without having to cover their faces.

Take AIDS, for example.

“We heard about that in the ‘80s,” Chaplik told his colleagues during a Wednesday floor debate on the bill. “Yet no masks were required.”

Chaplik’s bill passed shortly thereafter, on a party-line 31-28 vote, with not a single legislator pointing out that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, cannot be spread through the air.

But then, no one will ever accuse the Arizona Legislature of operating on a high scientific plane.

They can't opt out of other health mandates
Chaplik is a newbie in the Legislature, a real estate investor who ousted then-Rep. Jay Lawrence, a geniunely nice guy who was perhaps best known for saying really dumb things then having to apologize for them.

It remains to be seen if Scottsdale traded up.

Chaplik’s House Bill 2770 would allow businesses to decide whether to enforce local mask mandates. Customers then would have the option of deciding whether to go there.
This person was elected to a position above that of sewer sweeper?

No masks for the Ebola outbreak, because we did a real lockdown and cut it off before it became a pandemic. For aids, the public was instructed to wear masks--made of latex, not fabric, and mount them on your crotch.

PS. I am looking for the public health/epidemiology science that explains why the death RATE is higher in the USofA than it is in many third world countries where they can't even get any of the vaccines out because access to refrigeration is so bad.

My gut tells me that we have a higher death rate because, as Tommy Lee Jones put it in "Men in Black", "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." It didn't take any pushing to make people scream, "Mah freedumz" and refuse to mask, wash, socially distance or even take basic precautions. All they did was hoard TP and ammunition. Americans are used to not being phased by these third world diseases and have spent years laughing and poking fun at images of people in other parts of the world that wear masks in public. The whole thing became so politicized (from all sides of the spectrum) that there is no reasoning with anyone regarding the pandemic.

I'd bank on it being methods of reporting and evidence gathering, it being better here, and worse there, to blame.

What is the point of comparing the US to third world countries? They have so little in common, including travel, commerce, population concentrations, and importantly the ability to count the number of cases and deaths from COVID. The relevant statistics show the death rate in the U.S. from COVID is less than many similarly developed countries, including the UK, and on a par with many more. Given the variance in how deaths are attributed from country to country, it is clear that while the U.S. has been hit hard, there are a number of countries that have been similarly impacted, or even exceed that of the U.S. As for vaccines for poorer countries, China is trying to buy its way out of disfavor by supplying many countries with a more traditional vaccines so no extraordinary refrigeration needed. Hopefully these vaccines will be effective across broad populations since the Chinese do not go through the same rigorous testing that western countries have required.
