Run this up the flag pole...

Post by Gob »

A rude invitation to the leader of the Welsh Conservatives has appeared on a Town Hall announcing the apparent ceremony to raise the Union Jack on the building.

The prank notice could be seen on Grosmont Town Hall's notice board today on Tuesday, April 13, and appeared with the Monmouthshire County Council logo on it.

On the left, it says in English: "In accordance with the directive of Minister for Culture, the Rt Hon Oliver Dowden, notice is hereby given that a flagpole will be erected on Grosmont Town Hall such that the Flag of the Union can be flown on a daily basis.

"The flag will be raised for the first time on St George's Day, April 23 2021 by the leader of the Conservative Party in Wales, the Rt Hon Andrew R T Davies."

Then next to it on the right is a fake Welsh translation that says: "A fu erioed weinidog mwy chwerthinllyd na Rt Hon Oliver Dowden. Polyn baner ar neuadd y dref. A yw'n mynd yn fwy gwirion.

"Hoffen wahodd Rt Hon Andrew Rt Davies i Grosmont am dydd Sant George, 23ain mis Ebrill, felly gallwn wthio baner yr undeb i mewn ei t*** **n."

In English, that means: "Has there ever been a more laughable minister than the Rt Hon Oliver Dowden. A flagpole at the Town Hall. And it gets dafter.

"I would like to invite the Rt Hon Andrew R T Davies to Grosmont on St George's Day. April 23rd. so that we can push the Union Jack banner into his a***hole."

The poster comes after last month's news that all UK Government buildings in Wales must fly the Union Jack in "superior position" to the Welsh flag.

At the time, UK Government Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden said: "The Union flag unites us as a nation and people rightly expect it to be flown above UK Government buildings.

"This guidance will ensure that happens every day, unless another flag is being flown, as a proud reminder of our history and the ties that bind us."

The plan attracted controversy and criticism across Wales.

Among those deriding the decision was Western Mail newspaper columnist Carolyn Hitt, who said: No-one should tell us when, where and how we should fly it."

The poster outside Grosmont Town Hall was pictured by a local resident and shared on social media, with one person describing it as "utterly, utterly magnificent".

"That is absolutely spectacular! Do let us know how long it (the notice) manages to stay there, and whether the invitation is accepted," another person wrote.

However, while the paper is headed with the local authority's logo, a spokeswoman for Monmouthshire County Council told WalesOnline the notice was “definitely not” one of theirs.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Reminds me of this one from a couple of years ago. They got an automated 'out of the office' reply from the translator and made the sign accordingly.
