An eight-year-old boy lost in the remote woodlands of Michigan survived for two days by eating snow (a crisp white with a hint of grapefruit, honeydew and gooseberry) while hiding beneath a log for shelter. Nante Nieme went missing on Saturday while camping in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. He got lost while walking to gather firewood, sparking a 150-person search effort to rescue him. On Monday he was found underneath his log "in good health", about two miles from his camp.

If I recall my Boy Scout training correctly, eating snow will not provide hydration--as I recall, the body works hard to melt the consumed snow, which leads to a net loss of water. If he could melt in first (perhaps in the sun), he could use it to hydrate himself, but otherwise, it would be worthless.

That leads me to think the snow was not exactly crisp white. Two miles? Two day search? Sounds to me as though the authorities need to consider a contract with another tracking-dog source.
