A woman opened fire on a puppy that had threatened children, but wound up shooting and killing her husband, police in the US state of Mississippi said.
Witnesses told police
the pit bull, named Cocaine, lunged at some children and tried to attack them.
The dead man's son said the children were taken inside
and his father picked the dog up.
It was then that police say Betty Walker fired twice, hitting the dog once and her husband once in the chest.
Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green said the death of 53-year-old Robert Walker appeared to have been accidental.
She said a Hinds County grand jury would decide whether to charge Mrs Walker.
Animal control officers have taken the dog, and its owner could face charges.

If I were a detective investigating this case, I might want to start with insurance policies....

Walker Sr., a retired seismic engineer, was painting house address numbers in the backyard shortly after 3 p.m. Friday when a white 8-month-old pit bull named Cocaine jumped the fence and tugged the shirttail of a 7-year-old relative, said Walker Jr., relaying his mother's story.
Walker Sr. threw a brick at the dog while his wife quickly escorted her grandchildren into the house. She retrieved a .38-caliber revolver and returned outside, where she found her her husband holding the barking pit bull with both hands. Walker Sr. and the pit bull were face to face with the dog's back to Betty Walker.
Betty Walker fired two shots, the first striking her husband in the upper right chest. The second bullet struck the dog's left front leg.
"I had gone upstairs to lay down, and I just heard two shots. I jumped out of bed and I heard my momma scream," Walker Jr. said.
She was screaming, 'Your daddy's been shot! Your daddy's been shot!'"
Assuming a robbery had occurred, Walker Jr. ran to his pickup and retrieved his pistol. But there was no robbery, his mother explained.
"I saw daddy laying on the ground. I'm holding him and I'm saying, 'Daddy, stay up! Wake up! Breathe!'" Walker Jr. said.
"Momma was screaming, 'I shot your daddy! I shot your daddy!'"
Walker Jr. ran back to his pickup and backed it into the yard. Neighbors had helped Walker Jr. lift his father onto the tailgate by the time police and an ambulance arrived.
Walker Sr. was pronounced dead less than two hours later at a hospital. He was 53.
"It was a freak accident," Walker Jr. said. "I don't know what else to say."
Jackson Police spokeswoman Colendula Green said Saturday the shooting remains under investigation. A Hinds County grand jury will determine whether Betty Walker should face criminal charges.
The pit bull was picked up by animal control immediately following the shooting.
The dog's owner, Lazarius Montgomery, also could face charges. Montgomery lives two houses down from Walker Jr. and was not home for comment Saturday afternoon.
Montgomery's cousin, Robert Ferguson, has said neither he nor Montgomery knows how the dog got out of a pen. Montgomery has said he was asleep when the shooting happened and was awakened to learn his dog had been hurt.
"I don't have no ill will toward my neighbor," Walker Jr. said. "It's just one of those things."
Family and friends wandered in and out of Walker Jr.'s home offering condolences and consoling Betty Walker, who mourned in a back bedroom.
The Walkers were married for 32 years and had four children.
"My mom loved my dad. They traveled the world together," Walker Jr. said.
"She said, 'Please forgive me. I killed your daddy.' We told her she was only trying to protect him."

It doesn't change
my view; given the odd facts in this case, the first thing I'd want to look at would be the insurance policies...
That would be true whether the folks in question were white, black, or Alien Grays...
I have problems with this case...

It would seem a difficult scenario to stage, unless she was that quick witted that while she was trying to protect her grandchildren from a pitbull, she had the presence of mind to think that it would be an opportune moment to off her husband.

I think it was probably an accident and would think that regardless of the race of the individuals involved. However, she still could be guilty of negligence; people who own guns have a responsibility to act reasonable. If she had killed her husband while fighting off an intruder that would have been different, but shooting in the direction of her husband to kill a dog he was holding at arms link was not reasonable. She could have come up beside her husband and shot the dog. Or better still he could have pinned it to the ground and she could have come up next to him and shot it. At any rate I bet she had never fired a gun before. If you are going to own a gun you should be familiar with it.
However, it is still a sad situation.
Also, any dog that has to be penned up for safety reasons should probably be killed.

Let get back to the real story: Does the lives of white southerners( rednecks, rebels or whatever) have any value? Or is it funny when they are murder, robbed, raped or killed in stupid accidents? Why is that learning that the victim was black changed the hole tenor of the string? Was it possible the man killed was having sex with his half sister?

The colour of the stupidity made no difference to me. The stupidity of the action was the key to this story. Why are you trying to change stupidity into a race issue?

Hen, because it does appear to make a difference to some here, not you of course. It is more of an American thing. It is just not funny when a black man is killed but it is hilarious when a redneck bites the dust. You will notice that the jokes stopped as soon as the race of the victim was known. My people on the other hand are evil and stupid and deserves what happens to them.
