Lucifer and Messiah have been banned.

NAMING your new bundle of joy Lucifer has been effectively banned by New Zealand's names registrar after three parents had the odd request knocked back.

The country's Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages has been cracking down on mothers and fathers getting too creative with their children's names, ruling out punctuation marks such as . (Full Stop), * (Asterisk) and / (presumably ''Slash'').

The list of 102 names rejected in the past two years includes Baron, Bishop, Duke, General, Judge, Justice, King, Knight and Mr, all deemed too similar to titles.

Messiah was also turned down, as was 89, and the single letters, C, D, I and T, although Q and J were accepted after being queried.

It's a new hard line for the agency that made headlines in 2008 when it was revealed to have approved a series of strange monikers, among them Benson and Hedges, twins named after the cigarette brand, and Violence and Number 16 Bus Shelter, both for boys.

One girl was so traumatised by her name, Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii, that she had it legally changed at age nine.

In accepting her name change in 2008, Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt said odd names had the ability to scar children as they grew up.

''It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap,'' he said.

At the time, the authority tried to defend its lax approach by pointing out it had rejected names including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Sex Fruit, Stallion and Twisty Poi, a staple food in Polynesian cuisine.

Somehow Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii just ''slipped through''.

They banned Baron? As in Baron Cohen?

They didn't ban Earl? As in the Earl of Doncaster?

What a load of rubbish!

Some names should definately be banned though, others? It is a bit of thin ice.

Hmm, when do they start making all the people with surnames of Baron, Bishop, Knight, Duke, King, etc change their names?!

Define an "odd" name. I have known...
Tremayne Hill
Rufus Gabriel Loonfeather
Elvis Aron Pettibone
Archibald Francis Gardner
Joao Santos
Santos DeLeon
Aaron Way
Donald MacDonald
Opie Carter
Dana Kieker (a man)

There was a basketball player at the University of Rhode Island...most of his life, he went by the name "Shammgod Wells". However, at URI, he went to his legal name: God Shammgod.

Rufus Gabriel Loonfeather
Now there's a name that looks like it came straight out of a Marx Brothers movie....

As surnames they could not be mistaken for a title.

He was a full-blooded Commanche (hence: "Loonfeather")...Rufus was his great-grandfather, Gabriel his grandfather. Everyone called him "Gabe".

Kiwis use titles?

I know a few Emanuels, and have no problem nor confusion between they and the Messiah.

Jesus prayed in the desert and was crucified on the cross.

Emanuel(s) crossed the desert, and prayed for a low-rider cruiser.

Everyone called him "Gabe".
Given the available options, that was a wise choice.... :)

Yes. Being a civilized country, New Zealand has remained a monarchy.

Archibald Francis Gardner went by "Joe". (Though I'd have used "Frank".)

I know a couple, Dana & Jeremy. But he is Dana (goes by "Dan" or "Danny"), she is Jeremy (usually uses "Jerry"). About 60% of the junk mail gets it wrong.

I know of at least three men named Tracy/Tracey.

There is a MLB agent named Bean Stringfellow.

Bob Hope's name was actually Leslie.
