Mistake in poet Manley Hopkins' name angers lecturer
Dr Mack and the inscription outside Exeter Cathedral:
Dr Mack said it was a "disgraceful and embarrassing" mistake
A "disgraceful" mistake over the name of a famous English poet has upset a university lecturer in Devon.
Dr Robert Mack, an English lecturer at the University of Exeter, noticed the error on a paved inscription outside Exeter Cathedral.
A quotation is wrongly attributed to Gerald Manley Hopkins - when the 19th Century Victorian poet's name was actually Gerard.
The cathedral authorities said the mistake would be corrected.
The poetry-engraved paving around Cathedral Green is part of the cathedral's Third Millennium Campaign.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. Think about it...
We really are a mystery wrapped in an enigma.
[Set aside for a moment the completely miraculousness nature of human physiology.] Really, All we
can know, Is our "known" self. That which we perceive through our five senses and accumulated experiences. We can't begin to fathom the myriad dimensions our 'unknown' self. The subconscious mind rules us in more ways than we can imagine...
So to be true to what we Can Consciously
know; is to be true to that self. Hence, that tattoo makes a lot of sense.
Mind you; I wouldn't get it for myself; but it might make a nice desk plaque; like "The Buck Stops Here" or some such.
Mayhap this trip needs some water... cold water... ice cold water...
Now that I think about it? Fuck it.

That's the only part of your post that makes any sense.
Good point.

Fuck you Joe. Read it again. It makes perfect sense.
How can one be true to one's
"unknown" self?

No it doesn't.
You are trying to attach some kind of profound meaning to something that was misquoted.
But keep at it if you feel the need.
If trying to make sense of the senseless is your goal, then to thine own self be true.

It does make sense Timster, and possibly that is exactly what he meant and not to misquote Knothello.
It just looks very unfortunate, which is the first impression most people who don't "know" him will get.
