I wouldn't go so far as to call him a "sociopath"...("sociopaths" are usually smarter than this...)

Just an arrogant asshole who's impression of himself and his importance far out strips his real importance and capabilities....

The only thing this man feels he should apologize for, is not his appalling behavior...

But rather, the fact that he underestimated the ability of the person he directed it against to strike back...

That's why he says things like "I didn't realize how important you were..." as though that would be some sort of excuse for his abominable behavior....

As though he were to say:

"Well gee whiz, if I'd only known how effectively you could strike back, I wouldn't have been such an asshole..."

(Rather than saying, "I should never have acted this way towards anyone"...)

(As I said I've dealt with this type, and have made a couple of these sorts of hubris driven software providers regret that they weren't more responsive to my polite complaints...though I never took it as deep as Dave did...)

I don't see where the guy who politely and innocently inquired as to when he might receive the merchandise he had paid for and then got his head bitten off by an arrogant obnoxious asshole has anything to be ashamed of....

We're looking at the same exchanges here and seeing two entirely different things....

I'm seeing a guy who was trying to be polite and just wanted to get some honest answers from a vendor he had purchased merchandise from, who was then abused inexcusably, who then, completely justifiably, used his brains to turn the tables on the asswipe who was 100% in the wrong...

You on the other hand, looking at the very same exchange seem to see "Two people being mean to each other and using bad language"...

If I am correct in my interpretation of your position on this, (and please feel free to correct if I'm not; Lord knows I've been mistaken before....once or twice... ) I find your take on this somewhat puzzling, for this reason....

I know you to be a deeply and sincerely religious man. It has been my experience in dealing with deeply religious people, that they are all about being able to see qualitative moral distinctions; and having a very highly honed sense of "Right and Wrong 101"....

Indeed, in other discussions, whether or not I agree with your take on the specific topic, (some I do, some I don't) you certainly seem to come from that perspective...

Which is why I find your perspective on this quite puzzling...

This looks to me like a textbook case of someone quite obviously being in the right, and the other party quite obviously being in the wrong....if one looks at the facts, it doesn't look to me like there's a whole lot of wiggle room in terms of finding a person "in the right" and a person "in the wrong" here....

Is your sudden apparent embrace of moral relativism in this particular case based on nothing more than the fact that both parties used vulgar language? Is it really that superficial?

Or is there some other point you have here that I'm missing?

LJ it's not the thing per se although that's sad enough - it's the boasting and the obvious enjoyment of watching an emotional cripple being fed to the lions.

Google "Sermon on the Mount". Let's discuss how difficult/easy it is to "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you" (Matt 5:44). I find it next to impossible

On a general level I do agree that at times, even when a person is right in their actions, the way some people boast etc about it may be a bit hard to take - although having said that I didn't see enough chest thumping and boasting etc in this exchange to make me feel it was over the top.

But the fact that the guy was fed to the lions I feel in this instance was merely justice being served. And I believe the level of justice he received (and in this case I believe the ongoing comments afterward formed part of that justice) suited the 'crime' he committed.

Regarding the Biblical quote:
Your God is pretty big on justice, even some very harsh and cruel justice at times. Even sometimes justice that, to me, has seemed excessive and over the top in relation to the actual crime committed. And He gets pretty boastful about it, and allows the stories to be retold over and over again with a few embellishments here and there - maybe as a 'warning', or maybe just so people know how awesome He was and how He showed that person who was 'boss' and who 'ruled'.

So with respect, I don't think a single quote from the Bible really gives a whole and complete picture on what your God's view would be in a situation like this.

God also has some sort of often misquoted saying about the meek being the ones who would inherit the earth. The meek - those who spend their time trying to turn the other cheek, and trying to see the good in everyone and everything, and trying to humbly go about their existence without creating too many waves - usually get trodden on, mentally squashed and ruined, and left at the bottom of every part of life they are meekly and humbly trying to suffer through. The people who do make it in this world are usually those who speak up for themselves and their rights, and those who push for justice against the nasties of the world.
The prime example? God, presumably whose world it is, is not meek and does not turn the other cheek. His son spoke as if he did, but in fact Jesus had others to do his dirty work - God's son was a manipulator and passive controller. And based on the words of the Bible, the only real threats to Gods position at the top of the proverbial takeover stakes are beings equally as egostistical and equally as hungry for power and as willing to smite people for the slightest perception of disloyalty or disobedience.

The words of the quote are hollow. God didn't do good for those who hated him. And God might authorise the writing of some empty words about loving and blessing and praying for those who would persecute him, but even as he might okay those words, his own actions are not in accordance with those directions. He was always, at best, hypocritical. And it's all detailed in the Bible.
Again, as an example, accordng to God's own book of words I and my entire race are still suffering today because some vaguely distant relative thousands of years ago ate some fruit they were told not to.

And the Bible serves as a very boastful record of God's actions over time. He does not apparently feel ashamed of anything He has done.

I agree with what i think is your premise that sometimes when people react to a wrongdoing, their reactions may end up being just as wrong as the initial wrongdoing.
And then sometimes people engage in far too much ganging up and backslapping and congratulating of each other when announcing to all and sundry how well they think they reacted to a wrongdoing.

My own personal opinion is that I don't think it was 'over the top' in this specific instance

Perhaps ironically, I don't mean to be so confrontational and perhaps 'over the top' about the religion aspect - it just pushed a wrong button in me when the biblical reference was thrown into this particular debate.

Actually I'm pretty sure "the meek will inherit the earth" isn't really a blessing rather a statement that when all is said and done only the meek will be left. In other words everyone who has some fight in them will be dead.

The Sermon on the Mount isn't as chipper and upbeat as people like to think. In fact most of it is downright depressing.

I was having a bit of rare spare time but in a bity of an antagonistic mood. Sorry'

I grew up in a house with an (almost militant and blinded-by-'the'way') religious mum and an (almost militant and sneeringly sarcastic) dad. It was an interesting mix! My mum always waited for 'God to fix' and my dad always waited for it to fail so that he could deride her for her ridiculous belief. There were, of course, other issues and it may be no surprise to hear that their marriage eventually disntegrated, but it did leave me with a somewhat distorted insight into both 'sides' of the great religious debate. I found myself for a lot of years not believing but not wanting to admit that I didn't believe in case God heard me and punished me for not believing in him!!!
As my mum has got older and more set in her way, or as I've understood more (not sure which), she's looked at more radical ideas. Her views are in the creationist field, and I believe she talks in tongues. i don't really know much more because we've all agreed that it isn't a topic we really care to discuss with her any more. That way we all enjoy each other's company!!
So my vague biblical references are leftovers from that. I used to enjoy the religious debates amongst 'heavyweights' - the DAF board had some really interesting ones - but more from a continual education view than an argumentative view.
I tried to bring my kids up to know about the various different religious and and non-religious choices available, so that they had the freedom to have their own choices. My mum doesn't approve (of course! - especially because we have a couple of little eastern philosophy influences around the house )- but I think it's healthier for the kids. Mine anyway. It's probably my reaction to my upbringing
