I hope the DPRK isn't ruined like the former GDR was. I was fortunate to travel by train from Frankfurt, West Germany thru East Germany to Berlin in 1965.

I went to Berlin in 1975. We drove but you could not stop along the highway and if you broke down they told you to stay in your car until the police came.

oldr.....did the East Berliners still have the fake storefronts (the ones with all the fake goods for sale) facing the wall towards West Berlin in 1975?

On the other side of "no mans land" yes they did. I think some of the empty apartment buildings even had curtains painted on the boarded up windows. (or was that the south bronx? :loon )

I'll have to check it out.

I had relatives (grandmothers cousin or something like that) living in East Germany til the wall came down. Also my grandmothers sister and husband left everything behind in the late 50's(?) early 60's and got out while they could as they heard the wall was going up. Crawled under barbed wire and eluded patrols to get out. They settled in Hamburg and we spent a weekend with them when we were there. Very nice people, gone now. :(
