The idea has been knocked around for years, but finally, the San Francisco Young Democrats and San Francisco Young Republicans decided to duke out their political differences with a friendly game of dodgeball. Needless to say, everyone took it way too seriously and a Supervisor/referee told someone they were acting like an “a**hole.” I can’t believe I almost didn’t show up!
The games were supposed to be held from 1-3pm on Saturday. I arrived at 1:30 and rule negotiations were still underway. Team turnout was dismal for the Young Democrats. They had about 15 players, all of whom came in their Saturday shorts and t-shirts. The Young Republicans arrived en masse in matching black shirts, all of which said “We Kick Donkey I Kick Ass.” Basically, the playing field looked very similar to the scene in ‘The Mighty Ducks‘ when the rag-tag Ducks, with their borrowed and duck-taped hockey gear, face off against the snooty Hawks in their flawless and evil black uniforms.
I was one of a mere 7 or 8 spectators at the Hayward Playground, set appropriately in the shadow of City Hall. Everyone else was on the field, and amazingly most of them were Republicans. Supervisors London Breed, David Chiu, Katy Tang, and David Campos had graciously agreed to referee. Due to the unmatched number of players, the Young Dems broke into two teams and the Young Republicans broke into three. At this point, the rules got too complicated for me to even pay attention. There was no scoreboard, no announcing of outcomes. But none of that mattered, because delightfully, a select few of the Young Republicans were playing like their lives depended on it. It was as if someone was holding a gun to the heads of their children, demanding that they beat the San Francisco Young Democrats in dodgeball or the kid gets killed. I saw a guy dive onto his face to avoid getting hit by a plastic ball. This match was no joke
