Wealthy bidders will get the chance to get their hands on the beautiful cream 1957 Maserati 150 GT Spider when it makes a one-off appearance and goes under the hammer in California.

Those keen to get behind the wheel of one of the world's rarest cars could have to shell out anything up to a staggering £2.5million when auctioneers expect the hammer to fall at the two day auction.









Car specialist Steve Hart beautifully restored and rebuilt the convertible car so the lucky bidder will still be able to drive their new pride and joy which has been described as a ‘little rocket'.

The 46-year-old motor still proudly sports its original matching numbers engine, gearbox, Grand prix-type brakes and elegant Fantuzzi coachwork.

David Brynan, Specialist at Gooding & Company said: 'Unlike production cars, which have a track record and comparable sales, one-offs and prototypes make their own market.

I guess it would be redundant to say that this appears to be a pretty nice car.

Still, part of the process of evaluating a major purchase (at least for me) is backing off and asking "What else could I get for comparable money?"

To start with, a nice Ferrari, a big house, and a few concubines.

By comparison, the nice car comes up short.

When one has the money, one can buy whatever he/she wants. If it's an exotic car, what concern is that of mine? Not what I would spend a couple of million dollars on, but to each his own.
It is a nice car that I would like to drive some day (although they really need to put the steering wheel on the CORRECT side of the car) but as far as owning? no thanks, too many nuts out here on LI who would swerve into it while talking on their cell phones.

Thats the kind of vehicle I would take a trip across Rt. 66. Long straight sparcely traveled and beautiful scenery. Many years I made that trip by motorcycle and loved every minute of it.

I could never take it on a road trip. As an old Italian sorta-exotic, I would not expect to make it without breaking down!

And screw that thing, for $3+ million, I'll take a 427 Cobra. And a split-window 1963 fuelie Corvette. And a 1971 or 1972 440 Road Runner, GTX, or Charger.

I made that trip several times on a bike. I met many wonderful people and traded jokes and stories around many a campfire. Those are memories I will always cherish, especially since I can no longer ride.
