USA Kick Asss At Le Mans

Post by dales »

Eighteen months ago the automotive world was filled with skepticism over rumors that Ford would resurrect the legendary Ford GT, let alone take it racing. It’s now June 2016 and that car is not only very real, one of them just beat Ferrari to win its class in the the 24 Hours of Le Mans 50 years after the original GT40s did the same.

This Le Mans may have ended in total heartbreak for Toyota, but it was a great day for America. (And the very international team of drivers.)

The No. 68 GT driven by Dirk Müller took the checkered flag in the LM GTE Pro class, besting the second-place Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE. It finished 18th overall. The No. 69 and No. 66 GTs finished third and fourth in their class, respectively.

USA Kick Asss At Le Mans

Keep in mind the new Ford GT is built in North America -- the "far" North America: Markham, Ontario.

All yours for $400K

Even if you have a big sack of Gold Eagles, it may not get you one of these cars. I have read that Ford is being very picky about who gets one of these GT40s. Even tighter than Enzio was about the original GTO. And if you get one, I doubt it will be very close to the vehicles Chip Ganassi had in France. But cheers most assuredly. I think the two classes faster than the Ford are fakes. They are not anything close to the LeMans tradition of road car racing. They do not even have space for a passenger. I remember when Lotus flunked technical inspection because they had different wheel lug pattern front and back, so the mandatory spare tire carried on board would not work on all four corners.

Me, I would much rather have a nice 2004 Honda/Accura NSX

There's one man in my town who would have been certain to have gotten one — this guy.

Harry V. Dahl, third-generation auto dealer, obituary

In fact, he more than likely already had a confirmed order in hand, especially since he already owns a whole bunch of other old Fords — including one of these (in this same livery, I might add):

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Did Honda or Acura ever win at Le Mans?

Mazda did with a rotary that placed all other entrants to shame.

It was banned for being too competitive.

I believe you are correct, Mr. Dale. But I HAVE driven a car around the LeMans track--in 1961 when the roads were open to anyone with a road legal car and the Mulsanne straight was really straight. I know what a competitive race car is; I know I don't have the skill to control the real thing, or the time and money to keep such a thing running.

The NSX was a car that had legendary Honda reliability and ease of maintenance, with some strong hints of supercar performance.

Chrysler/Fiat has discontinued the Viper.
The Dodge Viper Is Officially Dead, With Five Final Editions

Five different special edition packages mark the 25th and final year of Dodge Viper production.

The long-anticipated death of the snake is upon us. Twenty-five years after it first went into production, the Dodge Viper's tenure comes to an end, with five commemorative special editions celebrating a quarter-century of the American V10-powered brute.

We expected there would be at least one last-hurrah special Viper, but Dodge is building four. The Viper 1:28 Edition ACR (shown above in black with red stripes) commemorates Randy Pobst's astounding 1:28.65 lap of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a time that shattered the previous record set by a Porsche 918 Spyder. Fitted with all the optional go-fast equipment available, including the Extreme Aero Package and carbon ceramic brakes, the 1:28 Edition mimics the Viper ACR 1:33 Edition produced in 2010. Up to 28 examples will be built.

The Viper GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR wears the classic white with blue stripes first seen on the 1998 Viper GTS-R GT2 Championship Edition, built to celebrate Viper winning the 1997 FIA GT2 championship. Up to 100 examples will be built.

The Viper VooDoo II Edition ACR is the all-black ACR shown above. With the same graphite racing stripe as the 2010 VooDoo Edition, only 31 of this color package will be built.

Unlike the previous three, the Viper Snakeskin Edition GTC is based on the touring edition of the Viper, not the all-out track-focused ACR. Painted in Snakeskin green with a special contrasting snakeskin-patterned SRT stripe, it's meant to highlight the fact that the Viper is literally named after a venomous snake. Once again, it takes inspiration from a nearly-identical special edition from 2010. Twenty-five examples will be built.

The fifth special edition, the Dealer Edition ACR, is only available through Dodge's highest sales volume Viper dealers, Tomball Dodge of Tomball, Texas, and Roanoke Dodge of Roanoke, Illinois. Not shown above, it's painted white with a blue center stripe and red driver's stripe, with all the fastest ACR bits. This one's limited to 33 examples.

We've known that the Viper couldn't survive forever—parent company Fiat Chrysler simply can't funnel resources toward an expensive and slow-selling sports car with an 8.4-liter engine when everyone else is scrambling to boost fuel economy and offer a crossover for every variety of commute. But we'll miss the steadfastly old-school Viper. In a world of increasingly user-friendly, daily-driveable supercars, the Viper has always been a brash, demanding brute. In a way, that makes it the last truly American car.

Of course, if FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has his way, the Viper won't stay dead forever. We always knew we liked that guy.
