I've never gone to a quick lube type place, in fact I've only ever had a shop do an oil change ONCE in my life (I was on a road trip around the country, which went almost 12,000 miles, so changed it mid trip). That place had a lift, not a pit. Pretty rare to see pits around here. I've only ever worked in a pit once, the Navy Reserve center I was at had one big enough for a semi.

My experience is like Guin's, I've always driven my car into the bay, with the employee doing the hand gesture guidance. It's hard to judge on the video, but it looks like whoever was driving accelerated way too fast. I used to change my oil, but it is such a hassle to keep and properly dispose of the old oil. Like many things, it is worth a few bucks to let someone with the right tools and setup take care of this.

It's been many years since I drove into one of those places but I recall it as fairly terrifying. I never understood why the bad design and how little effort it would take to have a slightly raised bar to prevent this type of accident.

Fascinating that so many people have trouble with one of the basics of driving--just where are the four tires when you are behind the wheel?

I recall that many (10?) years ago quick-lube places DID have the driver of the car drive it into position in the shop; perhaps there's been a change in the law? Even if there hasn't, I'm sure there must have been a change in the company's view of its legal liability.

BTW, every one of these shops I've seen HAS had exactly the sort of raised bar that @W mentioned (painted safety yellow, natch! ;) ) around the pit ; I was rather surprised that the shop in the video didn't have one.

It does look again.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Having people drive their car over an open pit is a recipe for disaster.

I saw this posted on the old Car Talk BBS several years ago. I use it as an example of where NOT to take a car. It still turns up on a search.

An acquaintance took his Taurus to Meineke Muffler for an oil change, and was presented with a long list of "needed repairs". Those included a $300 oil pan gasket replacement because there was dust clinging to some OLD oil that had seeped from somewhere. He showed me the list. When I looked at his engine, I also noticed that his oil filter had not been changed, and his "new" oil was quite dark and a quart low. What did he get for $29.95? Screwed.

Yeah, you can see it running about half-way down either side of the pit; the driver somehow manages to get the left-front wheel right on top of the guardrail and when it slips off, down she goes.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
