My brother and I once rebuilt a VW engine and made the mistake of puting in a crankshaft made in Brazil. Didn't last more than 10k miles before it broke right in half, 2 cylinders on one half of the crank, two on the other. We were able to drive it home as the two halves would catch on the jagged parts and run fine for a bit. Took a while to figure out that one. Timing would be on then totally out of wack. Didn't suspect a bad crank, we thought we did something wrong.
Redid the whole rebuild and put in a Made in the USA (maybe in Germany?) and it lasted til the car was sold some 8 years later.
