Re: Any advice on a new TV?
will if one clicks on the link provided it says
Seriously, is it too much to ask for you to be right on JUST ONE THING?LED Backlit
But to asnwer Sue - the price differential is way less than reported by google, for this xmas. I put a LED backlit in the LR of the RV for about $150 this summer from the shack Perhaps a 20% difference, not 200% as reported. It consumes 13w (perfect for boondocking on an inverter) and is only about 5/8" thick.
Re: Any advice on a new TV?
Which brings up another point LEDs are thinner by far...
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is

Did anyone deny it was LED back lit? I missed that.
Buit seeing as you raised it, what does LED back lit have to do with anything?Sony - XEL-1 - 11" OLED TV - 576p

21 reviews March 2008 - LED Backlit - Sony - 11 inch - Non-HD - 16:9 - HDMI - S/PDIF - 2 HDMI port - 3D Digital Comb Filter
Introducing the world’s first 3mm thin TV, the Sony Organic LED television. With a screen that’s as thin as three credit cards, Sony’s XEL-1 changes television as we know it. Not only is the XEL-1 incredibly thin, it breaks new ground with a 1 million to 1 contrast ratio that produces deep blacks in astounding dark scene detail. And, Sony’s patented STE (Super Top Emission) technology generates outstanding brightness and exceptional color expression, while an exceptionally rapid response time provides a smooth and natural reproduction of fast moving images.

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
The point being made Quad was that you claimed that:
CP kindly posted a link regarding OLED panels. The display on these TVs is made from LEDs rather than an LCD panel. Go ahead, look it up.They are all LCD.
The 'LED' you read about is the back lighting.

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
Gob (and others) illustrate a good point.
Do people really understand the technology?
Plasma, are out. they are like automatic transmissions in such that they have a planned failure date.
LCD tvs use the same display technology of the LCD watches, clocks, PDAs etc.
LCDs are shown to be rather energy efficifient, but the backlighting is not. Enter hi intensity LEDs which not only light it up, but are capable of selectively highlighting portions of the screen, giving a much better contrast ratio and viewing angle.
LED tvs do NOT mean there are red, green and yellow (or whatever) leds soldered very tightly together on the 'screen' to make pixels much like the shadow mask on a traditional gun/tube tv. As romantic as that sounds it would be totally cost prohibited to make, and run hotter than hell.
As the LED cost comes down and the array engines improve in speed, LED backlit tvs will/are coming down in price. A year or so ago it was perhaps 2:1 price ratio. I have found it much much less now. and the power requirements are stunningly lower.
But if you are coming from a Sony brand trinitron, wega etc, prepare to be disappointed for sporting events, fast action movies etc.

I realised my mistake, and corrected it. If only you were man enough to do the same.

Seeing as I have made no comment whatsoever on the technology, I'll take it you are just fantasizing about me again.

yessir,
follow the link he gave us and it says: on the first line:
March 2008 - LED Backlit - Sony - 11 inch - Non-HD - 16:9 - HDMI - S/PDIF - 2 HDMI port - 3D Digital Comb Filter
you do know that the 'O' in OLED does not mean 'orgasm' but rather 'organic', similar in appearance, vastly different in meaning. Its simply LED backlighting NOT using traditional color and shading.
Of course we could always use the ole standby, wiki, and read on the first line/sentence/paragraph:
An LED-backlight LCD television is an LCD television, flat panel display that uses LED backlighting instead of the cold cathode (CCFL) backlighting used in other LCD televisions. While not an LED display, it is called "LED TV" by some manufacturers and suppliers[1]. The use of LED backlighting allows a thinner panel, lower power consumption, better heat dissipation, a brighter display, and better contrast levels.[1]
Three forms of LED may be used:
White edge-LEDs around the rim of the screen, using a special diffusion panel to spread the light evenly behind the screen (the most usual form)
Dynamic RGB LEDs behind the panel
A full array of LEDs arranged behind the screen whose brightness cannot be controlled individually

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
btw, until gob edits my post above, you can see the error he made and I quoted, that he later changed.
big strike against edits eh?

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
You are not understanding this Quad...
OLED TVs are not LED backlit LCD panels. They are a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT technology. Trust me, look them up.

A while ago, in a post scooter made that I repeated on the CSB, he complained that un-anotated edits were changing the entire meaning of the post.Gob wrote:quaddriver wrote: seriously? Is alan funt still alive? wtf?

Your original, and the edit dont evne imply the same thing.
But if you state you were not saying I was wrong, you know, the post with the little 'wink' in it, then why did you make the post? were you agreeing I was right? curious entry.

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
as much as I'd love to believe you, what part of 'if you click on the OLED link and find:.....' is hard to understand?Sean wrote:You are not understanding this Quad...

when the OLED link states on the FIRST line 'LED backlit'........yanno...
If you can get the owners of the OLED website to remove the phrase 'LED backlit', I will submit.

Re: Any advice on a new TV?
TBH, I hadn't even clicked on CP's link as I am well aware of what OLEDs are.
Try this one...
Once again, OLED panels are a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY to LCD panels.

btw - I DID 'look them up', as demonstrated by my quotes of the website.Sean wrote:You are not understanding this Quad...

May I trouble you to see what you have looked up and how it is different?
seriously, if someone is soldering almost 3 million LEDs on a panel, I want to know about it. (and I also do that math that 3 million 1/1000th watt LEDS must be about that of a clothes dryer on low.) I own a 'LED' 19" TV in 720p. it draws 13w. therefore, what cannot it possibly have inside....... (thats a quiz hint hint)

I give up...
We've actually moved on a bit from soldering LEDs to a panel. Read the wiki page I linked to. You will be amazed by what the boffins can do these days...
