There "all season" tires, and then there are "all season" tires. In fact the wet traction and tread design on "all season" tires can be heavily weighted toward summer or winter.
FWD was a great advancement in the traction wars, but you still have to drive reasonably. I regularly see people with FWD and "all season" tires spinning aimlessly trying to get up the hills in my subdivision.
I've argued unsuccessfully with my wife for 20 years now about her perceived need to have 4WD. If you can't get there with FWD and 4 good snows, stay home.
