Her paranoia about buying used stuff preceded her relationship with me. Neither her father nor her brother has ever bought anything significant that was used, except for a house.

We have purchased about 20 new cars in our marriage, ranging from a '74 Gremlin to a 2013 Honda CR-V. Never had a significant problem. Never had a single problem that was not easily dealt with under warranty. One of our Suzuki's had an A/C problem that took two visits to correct.

Maybe we're just lucky?

If you managed to have a defect-free AMC Gremlin you must live a charmed life.

&

The largest downside to purchasing new is the issue of rampant depreciation.

Yannow, come to think of it my ex preferred new vs used, perhaps its a woman thing?

I prefer new mostly due to low interest and manufacturer warranties. I like being in a situation where I'm pretty much guaranteed not to have a major expense on a vehicle for as long as I'm still paying for it.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Firearms and high-end stereo equipment are two things that come to mind.

Why pay full freight when I can get an identical item for a fraction of the cost?

clothes, tools household electronics and machinery.... any number of mid range purchases. the vast majority of what my son wears is second hand. paying full price for things that he will only fit for a few months when you can buy used for about a quarter of the cost and some of it is either nearly or entirely new.

I thought about firearms. I guess they could go on the used but significant list. But I don't think I would buy used a used stereo system.

I prefer the experience of slowly unwrapping new stereo equipment and then turning knobs and pushing buttons that are guaranteed to have not been previously fondled and then discarded by some old & perverted audiophile... :D

I couldn't afford new Nakamichi equipment.

A move up from NEW Pioneer gear.

My used firearms have NO paperwork trial.

We have purchased about 20 new cars in our marriage,
We have bought a total of 3 brand new cars in our 29 years of marriage. A 1999 Buick Centrury (hers), a 2002 PT Cruiser (mine) and a 2010 Lancer (hers). All bought outright (or with 0% financing). All other cars were bought "pre-owned" although there were not that many certainly under 10 total

Most of the tools I made a living with I bought used. Heck, my big air compressor dates to the early 70's! My uncle has air tools even older...his most-used impact wrench is a Chicago Pneumatic from the late 60's. (Mine is a mid-80's Snap-On.)
