New ride

Post by Jarlaxle »

...well, not new. Just got it today: 2011 Ford Crown Victoria. It's the police model, white with 118,000 miles.

A crown vic is a very sweet ride. Had one back in the 90's. It was not a cop car and was all leather and loaded.

I bought a P71 because I DIDN'T want most of that stuff. (Offhand, I hate leather seats.) This one is surprisingly loaded for a PI (heated mirrors, cruise, CD player, power pedals, power seat), but still has no chrome and the rubber floor mat. One reason I bought it is that it never had roof lights or a pushbar. (It was a deputy sheriff's take-home car.)

An unscrupulous person with such a vehicle would use it to frighten other drivers on the highway - other drivers who would initially assume that you are a constable.

Paint it black with half-hubcaps.

Wear a Smoky The Bear hat whilst driving it.

Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

You bought an example of one from the last year Ford made the P71. Bravo. By 2010 they were ALL fleet or police cars. Yours is probably actually a P7B, same thing. They are great cars. The rear axle ratio is slightly lower than the standard Crown Vic for better acceleration, not to mention slightly lower MPG. The driveshaft is different too. Accept no substitutes. It also has a different induction system from the standard 4.6L V-8, although the plastic manifold is the same. I hope your manifold has already been replaced. They tend to leak coolant into the two forward sparkplug wells, and will cause a miss on #1 and/or #5, P0301 and/or P0305 OBD II codes. If you do ever need a manifold, they are far cheaper on Amazon or ebay than any local supplier I've found.

A friend of mine as an '08. He has installed alloy wheels and a Flowmaster exhaust. Sounds good. He reported 26 MPG on a 10 hour round trip. I said he must have had a tailwind both ways.

It is a P7B (switched from P71 in 2010)...all PIs got the aluminum driveshaft (stamped "POLICE") and the corresponding higher speed limiter. 3.27 gears were standard on the PI, with 3.55 optional. (Vics with the handling package, towing package, or LX Sport trim also got 3.27s.) I can see 26MPG from a Vic, especially with the exhaust opened up. Is it a P71? I have seen even better mileage from base-model (2.73 or 3.08 gears) Panther cars.

I just need time and good weather to figure out EXACTLY what the Sheriff's Department did when they disabled the damn cruise control! (They used the buttons for the strobes.)

On the positive side, I load tested the battery today and it is, while not new, in pretty good shape. (And if it dies, Walmart has a replacement for $48!)

Yes, his is a P71. He bought it from me.

Have you discovered http://www.crownvic.net/ yet? It's not sponsored by Ford, so the answers tend to be right.
