Which is the normal position for a rear view mirror, and which is the anti-glare position?

Tab up, tab down - which is which?

Opinions?

On some cars it's when you pull the tab toward you. On others it's left or right. Some are up and down. Newer cars have automatic mirrors and some other adjustments can be made.

It's best to check your owner's manual.

No owner's manual. It's a very basic version and backward/forward is more correct than what I stated. It works both ways, but I've just always wondered which was *supposed* to be the default and which the anti-glare setting. Thanks.

If the mechanism is the same as the GM one I saw it is pulling the lever toward you that "activates" anti glare. If you're really bored you can get up close ad look at the mirror as close to edge use as you can and note the location of the rear mirror glass in each position. (Farther back and angled is anti glare)

I've found either way works perfectly well. I generally set it so anti-glare is down, because if I set it so anti-glare is up, I get a lot of extra reflections from streetlights through my sunroof.

An interesting thing was, if done just right on my '78 Datsun Station Wagon that we shared for a while, I could set the mirror (lever pushed forward) and the mirror was positioned perfectly for my Mom, and pulled back, was perfect for me. Opposite worked as anti-glare for both.

It's just annoying when I drive my '76 Datsun Pickup and forget it doesn't have an anti-glare mirror, and knock it out of adjustment. It's just a flat mirror, as Nissan didn't put anti-glare mirrors in the trucks until 1980 (but did in cars starting in 1974).

Usual I've seen is-tab forward for normal, tab rearward for anti-glare.

Maybe this will 'shed' some light off the subject.

That's what I had.
It tilts the bottom of the mirror slightly toward you and upward.

My subaru does it automatically.
Of course now you need power to the mirror.

I'm able to pull the same stunt with the mirror in my wife's '08 Civic.
