I can't imagine this as part of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation fleet, but I could see some rich sonuvabitch buying or building something like it as a private car.

Maybe even Dumb'old Trump.  There's already been presidential airplanes and yachts; he could designate it as the Presidential railcar and call it Amtrak One.

From the article:
A single trip costs bare minimum $2,865, the SCMP reports, for either a two or four day trip and upward of $8,500—which makes sense given there’s only room to hold 34 people on the train.
Pricey, but not prohibitive.

Build it and they will come.

They tried building it ...

and no one came.

And then there was this .... a multi-million dollar fiasco that never ever *DID* make it onto the rails.

The Marlboro Unlimited: Up in smoke.

I'm betting the design crew all died of lung cancer.

I don't know what trip in Japan would require a sleeper, but I would think this could be sold as luxury "land cruising" to people who don't like to sail but would like to tour. Imagine a one week European tour where you can tour major tourist areas, then relax on board with gourmet meals and high end drinks while you travel to the next destination. I don't think I'd really care for it, but I'd bet there's a market.

Probably without a severe case of the runs.
