We went to see the Flying Scotsman today, first visit for her into Cornwall. What a magnificent sight!!

Do you realize you are more likely to see an old restored steam locomotive in operation than a working example of some of the earliest-generation diesel-electric engines that pushed them off the rails in the first place?

If one is really into steam locomotives, it is a perfume. :nana

Out here in CA during the age of steam, locos were oil-burning.

And Jrl, while coal does smoke a lot, the foulness depends on the type of coal. I recall seeing a show on history channel about trains that talked about buring anthracite coal and how some railroads used that as an advertising campaign (Ride the road of anthracite).
