which tool is most versatile?

Post by wesw »

sorry ray, my old Toshiba is down for the count....

big-ass piece of crap that it was.....

probably best, the boob tube is basically non-libertarian......

other than google, I would say that the oxy-acetylene torch-set is the most versatile of tools...., but I m open to adjusting my opinion.

That's easy; the hammer...

All you have to do is consider every problem to be a nail, and it works great...

A Trumpanzee, of course. Every one of them willing to say and do whatever is dictated by the whims of their fuhrer. And every one of them is a tool.

I'm very partial to my Leatherman Wave. Most versatile tool I've ever had. I misplaced my original once, and had such a hard time without it that I bought a second. Of course my original turned up a week or so later. It stays on my desk at home, and the new one travels in my pocket. They are both "Waves" but the new one has a couple of extra appendages with interchangeable bits.

Question: can a hammer be used to build a border wall that neither Mexico nor Congress will pay for?

And would it make a noise?

I vote for Vise-Grip locking pliers. You can hammer stuff with vise-grips, but you can't vise-grip stuff with a hammer.

And MGM - that's a good answer, but as I understand wes's question it's a bit of a cheat: the Leatherman is not so much *A* tool but rather a COLLECTION of tools, all fastened together in one handy package. Which one of the many parts of your Leatherman Wave would you consider *THE* most essential?

How about one of these: What could you not make with it?

I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

I have a small vice-grip wrench in my tool bag I carry on the bicycle. It also contains a Buck cadet 3-blade folding knife. I have used that wrench as a hammer, to put in push pins to mount pictures on the side of a wooden book case at work. For that it does work much better than a large screwdriver which I have also used for similar purpose.

Any one actually always use, outside of hobby or profession, only the tool designed for the particular job?

I maintain that it's still one tool. Otherwise, you wouldn't have said Leatherman "is" but Leatherman "are". Yes, I've even used one as a hammer at times.

Man, now that I think about it, the answer is obvious:

Image

The Sonic Screwdriver:
The functions of a sonic screwdriver are based on its power over sound waves, radiation, wavelengths, frequencies, signals, and electro-magnetism. It is shown to hack, disable, activate, and otherwise control technology from almost everything, allowing it to remotely control almost any machinery, mechanisms and computers it is applied to, allowing it to open locks, detonate explosives, remotely activate electronics, override most systems, activate computers, and cause some energy weapons to burst into flames or sparks.

Unlocking or locking a door
Burning or cutting any kind of substance
Remotely detonate certain machines or explosives
Amplify sound-waves and the power of an X-ray machine beyond its normal capacity
Disarm weapons and electronics
Flashlight
Intercept and conduct teleportation
Hack an ATM[My personal favorite; I'd like to see a pair of vise-grip pliers or a Leatherman do that... ]
Regenerating razor wire on a fence
Darken eyeglass lenses to transform them into sunglasses
Microphone (when connected to an audio amplifier)
Detect and interpret signals
Conducting medical scans
Locking the coordinates of the TARDIS
Tracking alien life
Using red setting or dampers
Control the properties of atoms and molecules on a small scale
Operate computers, whether their origin is alien or human
Provide Geo-location
Light candles
Creating a force field wave with two other sonic to physically repel a Dalek
Modification of a mobile phone
Disclosure and deactivating camouflage
Disarm Robotics
Scan and classify matter
Shatter glass
Create an "acoustic corridor" for speaking with someone far away
Shocking neural centers of a living creature
Tighten and loosen screws [I don't believe I've ever seen one do this; they may have made this one up.]
Download a person's consciousness and transfer it into a computer hard drive

The Sonic Screwdriver?"
Don't waste your money. Mine blew through AAA batteries faster than a box of eclairs at a WW meeting.

I use it now as a backscratcher.

----yes, you need a hammer to crush the limestone for the concrete

---the leatherman is a fine tool, although I will advise you that pulling a 16p nail with the longnosed pliers is not adviseable...

---visegrips!?!?!?.... rejected.

-----the pen? ...yes, a contender...., good for stabbing folk with....

-----the sonic screwdriver is imaginary..., for now....

----I d say the oxyacetylene torch is still ahead , with the hammer running a close second, you can make a lot of tools with a hammer....., but you can make a hammer with the oxy-acetylene torch....as long as you have good ore.........., and plenty of gas......
