GPS ap for iPhone
I have been using a separate GPS by Garmin (same one!) for more than 5 years. I am very happy with the way it works, until now.
Now, the day (light background) night (dark background) display no longer changes automatically. The wire that is the traffic notice antenna and power cord is a frayed connection. The Altitude display jumps on and off unpredictably. It turns itself off (I think from overheating) just when I need it most.
What I like best: easy to read the display while driving. Actual speed and local speed limit is very accurate. Maps are updated frequently at no additional cost. Good guidance on what lane I need to be in to go where I want to go.
Any recommendations for a GPS ap for an iPhone (Apple) ?

I thought all iPhones had a GPS/driving direction app installed from the factory...?
Re: GPS ap for iPhone
I am a Waze user with my iPhone. I like it a lot. It gives traffic reports as well as reports from other Waze users in real time. You get stuff like, "Vehicle stopped on shoulder ahead" or "debris on road" or "Police reported ahead". That's all because another Waze user just saw it and clicked on the report button on the app.
The speed is displayed and the speed limit (if available) is displayed right by it. You can update it dynamically, too. Like if you go through a town and the limit shows as 35, but it's reporting that it's 25, you can issue a correction in the app and they will investigate and update it.
For guidance on what lane, you get stuff like, "in 1 mile, use either of the left two lanes to stay on route 13" or "in 1000 feet, exit right using the right lane".

Yes, mine does. It's just called 'Maps'. It works well enough for me but I rarely use it. I'll use it next time I drive for the heck of it. I don't remember if it shows speed limits or my driving speed.
In short, SG, I guess I'm not much help.

Yes, I have "Maps" on my phone. But it is more like 'MapQuest" than a real GPS. It will pull in destinations directly from my contact list; that is not that much added value over a GPS for me.

My car has a built in GPS which I use, but I use waze (on my samsung phone) when I drive other cars, and it has a lot of good points as eddieq pointed out; my favorite are al traffic updates by people on the same route at the same time.
Re: GPS ap for iPhone
And the downside of Waze and others is the inability to think, which combined with unthinking people who follow every suggestion from the app, lead to neighborhood streets being clogged with people saving mere seconds from taking major streets, and frequently enough getting such drivers into dangerous places by ignorance that all roads are fine.

What? Mine will give turn-by-turn directions, just like my TomTom.Burning Petard wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 1:10 pmYes, I have "Maps" on my phone. But it is more like 'MapQuest" than a real GPS. I gave up on Apple Maps when it told me in order to get home I needed to turn off the street I live on.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

That's more an indictment of the Jobsian cultists (who are much like Trumpanzees in their slavish fanaticism to all things Apple) than anything else.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: GPS ap for iPhone
I recall a couple of years ago, when coming back from a ski area to Denver airport, Waze took us off the highway near the airport and into a residential neighborhood. We had a few hours so I followed the direction and in a few miles it told me we were at the airport, although it was nowhere in sight. I presume that there was a boundary fence of the airport nearby, but I didn't see it.And the downside of Waze and others is the inability to think, which combined with unthinking people who follow every suggestion from the app, lead to neighborhood streets being clogged with people saving mere seconds from taking major streets, and frequently enough getting such drivers into dangerous places by ignorance that all roads are fine.
You have to use your common sense and realize that an airport as big as Denver will clearly have a highway exit that is clearly marked. But sadly, common sense is quite uncommon.

I used Google Maps on my Android phone, but have a GPS in my campervan.

I also use Google Maps/Navigation on my phone. (Have a GPS, mostly only use it on my bike.)

That kind of GPS is great to lead you to the hereafter. I always go into a room and wonder, “What am I here after?”

I like Waze for the real time updates on traffic.

Can't stand Waze. It's the default map app on our in-truck tablets/phones, but fortunately they also have Google Maps which also have realtime traffic. The issue I have with Waze is that it shows ads every time you stop at a light or in traffic. Distracting.
My previous job we used iPhones so it was Apple maps, which I found about equal to Google maps. Again, the company had Waze on the phones but for some reason my company phone didn't, so I never used it then.
One of my co-workers has a Garmin with cellular data so it does realtime traffic.
Anyhow, Garmin does sell an app for iPhone, called StreetPilot Onboard. How it works I do not know.
