Ah, the pinnacle of the combined talents of Steve Goodman and John Prine! 
I'll bet if the two of them were alive today they would've managed to incorporate a self-driving pickup truck into that awesome final verse.
BTW, it's always annoyed me that David Allen Coe, who had the big hit version of the song, left out half the first verse—which I've always loved almost as much as the last verse:
