OK, WTF? :)

Gob that old highway is the only road through the Santa Cruz mountains ...to Santa Cruz, CA the last bastion of the 60's Hippie culture. (Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, who really is dead now, is worshiped there as a deity.)

The highway itself hasn't been upgraded in at least that long, unless you count when it has to be dug out from a landslide or an earthquake. Driving it can be pretty treacherous if you're 'Valley People' that is; used to only city driving. The traffic and accidents on it are legendary (I have a tale of my own, I'll share later) ...in the winter the curves and rain send dozens of valley people into the rails; in the summer the entire population of San Jose tries to use that tiny two-lane route to get to the beach, which can lead to terrific traffic jams extending miles back into the city!

I remember before there was a suicide barrier erected along 17.

Taking that twisty road in my old Porsche was a blast.

There was a cool roadhouse at the summit caled "Cloud Nine" ;)
