I'm using an APPLE computer at my brother in law's house.

WHAT A POS!

(he did build the thing from discards)

Again, what a pos!

No scroll wheel on the single button mouse and a keyboard which reminds me of 1996.

what vintage mouse are you using? most mow have sensors built in that can tell if you are "right clicking or "left" clicking as well as scroll/page functions etc...

I have no idea, he did build the thing from APPLE discards where he works.

Isn't by definition something made with discards likely to be, well, less reliable than the "first quality" items.

I do love my MacBook, sorry to disappoint you.

(and I just finished the Walter Isaacson bio of Jobs -- fascinating book)

It was a Mac deskstop

btw: my B-I-L has "worked" at APPLE since 1979, kinda like he should have a plaque erected at 1 Infinate Loop Way in Cupertino.

Wasn't the first apple (or whatever name the prototype Jobs and Wozniak built) made from mostly "discarded" components?

Back in the old days, in the time of "descrete logic", an IC had multiple gates (usually 4). If one gate failed the whole IC would be replaced, but the other gates in the packed would still function.

I still have my Texas Instruments TTL book (the brown hard cover one).

I am going out to buy a new (to me) computer today or tomorrow; this warhorse is getting a bit too temperamental for my peace of mind. (hadn't checked the error logs in a long while, it's a miracle the processor had time for dealing with anything but errors). By chance I saw an ad for a very serviceable refurb model at the same store I bought this one 7 years ago (also a refurb). I thought I was getting a deal then, I will be paying less than two thirds as much now, for a far, far more powerful machine. Just needs a video card to improve on the built-in graphics, which I will also get cheap by getting something a bit out of date, but more than adequate for my needs.

I always buy refurb - I think you can get a great deal that way. Apple sells refurbs/open stock - that's how I got my MacBook, for far less than retail.
