Damn, that's a point...

But I suppose having a Kindle would mean more weight allowance to bring hard copy books home with me, so it's another win! :)

Or you could ship them and no worry about the weight.

Now *there's* a conundrum -- shoes or books? Sigh.

I wasn't being sarcastic. As well as a bag of books, I usually also travel with a bag of shoes . . .

Kindle killer?

FOR true bibliophiles, no amount of technological wizardry matches the feeling of paper on skin that only ''real books'' can provide.

With the release next week of the pocket-sized, ultra-light ''flipback'' book, they can enjoy the feel of a printed novel and the portability of an e-book.

The books measure 12 by 8 centimetres and weigh less than 150 grams, barely more than an iPhone. The format was invented in 2009, when Dutchman Hugo van Woerden, the CEO of Christian printing house Jongbloed, was looking for ways to use excess Bible paper. He put the lightweight, high-quality ''onion skin'' into a series of miniature sideways books that can be read with one hand, perfect for crowded buses and trains.

The books were an instant success, prompting some to claim the paperback was fighting back against electronic readers.

''I certainly wouldn't claim these are 'Kindle slayers', although some book sellers are saying it,'' said Louise Sherwin-Stark, a sales and marketing director at Hachette Australia.

The publisher will release 11 titles in flipback form on July 12. They include Stephen King's Misery, John le Carre's Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy and James Frey's controversial memoir, A Million Little Pieces.

Hachette will release another six titles in the small format in October and a further six during the Christmas period.

Despite their size, flipback books cost slightly more to make than the average-sized paperback, partly because they are all made at the one printer in the Netherlands, but also because they use high-quality paper and have cloth binding on the spine. They are expected to retail for less than $20.

Brett Osmond, the marketing and publicity director at Random House Australia, welcomed the new format.

''Publishing has never needed the spirit of invention more than it does now, to remind people that printed storytelling is relevant, dynamic, interesting and adapting to changing tastes - and that publishers are prepared to take a risk.''

Just wanted to weigh in to say that I've read a few books on my Kindle now and just adore it! I bought a nice cover for it that lets me hold it like a book and which has a sleeve to hold the booklight I also bought. It's a really nice outfit that fits nicely in my purse, so I have any size book with me anywhere I go. Can't believe I ever balked at getting one, and highly recommend the Kindle to others who might be interested.

...unless of course you want to bring along more than one book. Then the portability comparison tends to lose a bit of ground.

Gob ALWAYS brings along more than one book anywhere. He is a chronic reader. He would go through a minimum of four books a week, sometimes far more.

I've been considering a Kindle for a while. As luck would have it, the Uni have been trialling them and decided against so there might be one up for grabs very soon... :D

I am one of the thousands of people eagerly awaiting A Dance With Dragons which is due to be released 12th July ... I was even prepared to pay full price for it and not wait for the paperback which isn't due until September ... until I went to preorder it ... hardback edition is priced at £12.99 Kindle edition £14.99!!!! Theres a discussion about the rip off here on Amazons own discussion page linked to the selling page : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/forum/cd/dis ... ZUIIN6IAFE that is a classic example of the publisher trying to cash in on the Game Of Thrones popularity following the TV series.

On the other hand having discovered the Amazon freebie lists (thanks whoever it was who posted the link) I have been happily downloading legal copies of new books and have discovered a couple of real gems by new authors. You do have to take the rough with the smooth and I have ended up with quite a few not very good ones but it doesn't take long to just delete them off my Kindle, it seems a great way for people who want to write to get people to read and review their work, so much so that I am about to pay for a follow up book by an author I found in the freebie list.

Gob I do think you of all people would really find a Kindle a must have bit of kit.

ETA: just followed a link from the amazon discussion to this article: http://www.baen.com/library/ by an author and publisher who agrees that the over pricing and attempted control of ebooks is counter productive, so much so that they are making many of the books they publish available as free downloads :ok since they are a SCiFi & Fantasy publishing house I can see that site becoming a firm favourite of mine :D
If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.

If you're going to fly anywhere, ereaders are one of those electronic devices you can't have powered on, during take-off and landing.

I just flew with my eReader - I didn't have use of it for about 10 minutes at start and end of flight. That inconvenience was far outweighed by having 50+ books to choose amongst whilst on vacation. I read a couple of interesting articles in the airline magazines during the brief time the Kindle was shut off.
